Polartec's Alpha insulation gives manufacturers the ability to add warmth to really breathable layers. So far, we haven't seen anyone do it quite as well as the Outdoor Research Deviator Hoody. OR combines Polartec Alpha with Power Dry to keep you warm without getting soggy as the activity level ramps up.
Snow gear, by its nature, has to balance form and function. Someone could make the most amazing gear in the world, but no one would buy it if it looked like crap. The problem is, everyone has different taste - you like blue, I like green. To solve this problem, most companies offer their snow googles in a huge variety of colorways. One of the top companies offers 18 different options on their top model. But that doesn't solve a major problem - if you want two goggle colors, you have to buy two sets of goggles. Sungod does things differently with their Revolt goggles. Before the SunGod Revolt, no one combined top quality optics with fully customizable style.
Barefoot Ted is a dude who really likes to be barefoot. Nine years ago, he wandered down to the Copper Canyons of Northern Mexico and met Manuel Luna, a Tarahumara tribesman who showed him how to make traditional huarache sandals out of old tire tread and cordage. Voila – Luna sandals were born. We set out to explore a wide range of Luna’s offerings and found that Lunas are, in a word, awesome.
Barefoot running has been getting a lot of traction (puny!) over the last few years, with an almost cult like following. Inspired by the Tarahumara Indians of Mexico - who made their huaraches sandals out of tires and string, then would run on them for very long distances. Steven and Lena Sashen are making some really cool minimalist (like really minimalist) sandals called Xero Shoes that are getting good recognition from runners, outdoor enthusiasts, paddle boarders and lots of folks who just like to feel the ground beneath them.
Think about your best waterproof, breathable jacket. Is it made of Gore-Tex? eVent? Neoshell? Well, we have some good news and some bad. First, the bad: your jacket is obsolete. Second, the good: you can replace it with something new and better come Spring of 2016. Columbia Outdry Extreme is going to turn the technical shell industry inside-out.
Building a shoe that can effortlessly cross from commuting duty to office duty is a difficult task. You have polar opposite interests competing for inclusion. On the one hand, you need the shoes to be stiff to transfer energy to the cranks. On the other, you want shoes that provide all-day comfort and look stylish in an office setting. At Engearment, we toss another wrench in there by using standing desks. So, not only do shoes have to be comfortable enough to wear all day - you have to be able to stand in them all day, too. Enter the DZR Mechanic.
One of our favorite hometown companies is Phunkshun Wear. They make an entire line of face masks and balaclavas for all weather conditions, from arctic chill to summer heat. We've had a few of them on our faces, including our very own Engearment masks. Here's the full rundown of why we like Phunkshun Wear so much.
Remember when you were a kid? You had those white tube socks with the colored stripes on them, right? Well, to paraphrase Milhouse VanHouten: Remember tube socks? They're back. In ski sock form! (We think the original quote was about ALF. He ate socks...or cats. Whatever.) Click through for more ALF jokes:
