With Earth Day right around the corner, Zeal Optics is reminding everyone of two things: 1) it’s almost the sunny season and 2) their sunglasses are about as earth-friendly as sunglasses can be.  They reached out to us about the sustainable Zeal Optics Spring Collection and let us try out some of the new frames.

We’ve discussed Zeal before, when their cotton-based frames blew our minds.  This new collection consists of four new frames: the CarsonCascadeEldorado and Emerson. The frames are constructed out of Z-Resin, a proprietary, plant-based material from Switzerland. Instead of crude oil, it’s made from the castor bean, an efficient, fast-growing perennial that is easy to grow, withstands drought, and thrives on marginal lands. Z-Resin doesn’t compete with food crops and also significantly reduces the amount of CO2 released during manufacturing.

Each new style also features Zeal’s E-llume lens, the world’s first plant-based lens that uses cutting-edge polarization and protects against UVA, B, C and HEV light.

We’ve been playing around with the Eldorado for the last few weeks.  They’re lightweight, fit well, and the lenses are top notch.  The anti-reflective coating eliminates reflection on the inside of the lenses that we’ve seen with other sunglasses with a flat-ish frame.  Zeal’s polarization does a great job of cutting glare.  The Eldorado is a large frame, so take that into account when you consider it.  The remaining models in the collection are a bit smaller.
