Pickle Juice, yes pickle juice, has been in our backpack for the last month as we have been testing out products to use in the backcountry to help use get an edge on dehydration when we are exerting ourselves. The Pickle Juice Company has been selling is main product – Pickle Juice – since 2001 and has gathered some fans (and probably grossed out some others) in the biking and running world. We spend more of our time touring in the mountains, going uphill and sweating out lots of electrolytes. Plus Sean is a big fan of pickles, so it was a unique match.

First, Pickle Juice is not just pickled water from your favorite pickles. There is actually a few additional ingredients, but nothing harsh. Water, vinegar, salt, dill, potassium, zinc, vitamin C and E. Each 8oz bottle supplies 820mg of sodium, 70mg of potassium, 40% of zinc and NO sugar or calories. There is a newer product that is a gel pack and therefore more concentrated. It is pretty intense!

Sean had many chances to share it with fellow athletes, friends and anyone who would ask what he was drinking. Most of them agreed with the taste, some not so much. The big claim with the product is that it stops muscle cramps. Well, fortunately, our testers do not get cramps all that often, so we can not speak to how effective or not effective Pickle Juice is for this. We are sure it would help, as many cramps are due to lack of electrolytes.

Sean randomly discovered his favorite use for Pickle Juice on New Year’s Eve. Mixing with tequila! This was a sober decision, that eventually turned into a much bigger tradition. As he was DJing a party, a friend offered up some rare tequila and the only thing Sean had in his bag was pickle juice to chase it with. Turns out they go great together! The whole party was enjoying pickle backs for their shots as well. As a solid gear reviewer, Sean decided to replicate this experiment again, this time with vodka. It was a success!

Pickle Juice could be a great part of your natural electrolyte replenishment, and it can certainly be part of your drinking. Sean’s favorite drink is 1 shot vodka, one cap of Pickle Juice. Quick and efficient. Enjoy!
