DetraPel Non-Toxic High Performance Outerwear & Outdoor Gear Protector Review

After 15 days of touring and 40k feet of fresh pow in a variety of conditions, I’m sold on the Detrapel High-Performance Outerwear and Outdoor Gear Protector as an alternative to other options out there.

The marketing gimmick can give off a weird vibe, especially when they say it “magically repels liquids while keeping you dry,” but despite all the hype and Shark Tank deals, DetraPel actually seems to work for getting more mileage out of

some of your favorite tech gear.

I found some used Rab Upslope pants for cheap, but the smell they gave off told me they had gone through the wash with regular detergent instead of a proper tech wash. I decided to test out the Detrapel High Performance Outerwear Protector on these pants and see how they hold up to multiple transitions in the Colorado climate.

The initial application was straightforward and I felt good about soaking through the pants properly with the spray. I went through a whole 6.8z bottle after two cycles and the pants had a bit of that fresh tech wash smell to it for at least a day or two. I wondered if I used too much, but the performance I’ve had so far tells me more is probably better than less.

One particular day stood out as weirdly warm for late December and the snow was more or less mashed potatoes with the ambient temps. Even then, my pants stayed dry while my gloves got pretty saturated from poking around in the snow.

I also applied the DetraPel Outdoor Gear Protector treatment to revive a hand-me-down Osprey Kamber 32. I did notice a bit of a color change, but it was no big deal as the pack consistently stayed dry throughout the multiple transitions I would do each tour as a splitter. It seems that you could cover at least 2 or 3 backpacks with the 6.8 bottle of the DetraPel Outdoor Gear Protector.

The pants and backpack seem to be really resistant to stains, especially from the typical road grime build up on my outback.

The downsides would be the initial smell, which probably would take a tour or two to air out. The reviews online give me an indication that flat materials such as tech gear work better than fleece-ish type materials, so consider what you’re applying the DetraPel to and test in a small area if you’re concerned about change in color.

Overall, the DetraPel High Performance Outerwear Protector seems like a strong contender in the “tech wash” area when it comes to water-repellant treatments. DetraPel certainly gets the Gear Destroyer stamp of approval!
