Kelty Ranger Doug Tent – An Iconic Collaboration

Kelty was inspired by the New Deal Era posters of Grant National Park and used that look for the Ranger Doug line of tents, sleeping bags and blankets.  I took the 2 person tent out for a few nights camping and was impressed.

Limited Edition and giving back

Inspired by the aesthetics of the General Grant National Park poster from Ranger Doug, this tent is funky looking! I was intrigued by the purple and yellow camo pattern. This would be the first time I have used a purple tent LOL.  What is really cool about the collaboration is that 1% of the proceeds go to support the Student Conservation Association.

Super easy setup

Using what Kelty calls “Quick Corners” in each corner – the set up is very fast.  Simply stick a pole in the sleeve and then the other end in the opposite sleeve.  The poles basically stand on their own from there.  Clip the tent body to the poles and insert the smaller brow pole and you are done!

easy corners. like, super easy

Proven design

This is not the first tent we have seen with this kind of build structure.  For a good reason.  It works and works well.  I used this on a relatively calm night at 10,500 ft.  Temps down to 30 degrees or so. Mild wind with some gusts.  The Ranger Doug tent handled the wind and barely moved.  Just what you want in a 3 season tent.

High walls

I was impressed with the higher walls on the tent body.  Some tents have more mesh, that goes much lower.  That may be ok in warmer climates, but we can get wild temperature change in the mountains of Colorado.  I appreciated the extra material as apposed to mesh.  In fact, I left the vestibule doors open all night to see how much protection it provided.  This is a good feature that may go overlooked.

just clip the poles!

Good size

Kelty states that this tent is 87″ long, 51″ wide and 43″ tall.  I was able to easily fit a double wide, long sleeping pad and bag in this tent with ease.  That is 50″ wide by 78″ long.  With a few extra inches to spare at the head.  So, a 6’1″ person, such as myself, can easily fit in the tent without touching the walls.  This 2 person tent is actually a 2 person tent.  Plus room for a few dogs.  Thumbs up.

Little features that matter

It is the little things that matter in my book.  Like the useable mesh loft pockets.  The strong tent stakes and the simple set up.  Though in the retro style and collaboration to raise money for charity and you have a winner.  This tent is great for couples or families that want a good tent, at a fair price.  At 5 1/2 lbs, this is a great combination of medium weight backpacking tent and car camping tent.
