Patagonia Macro Puff Hoody Review

In this Patagonia Macro Puff Hoody ($399) review, we will go over how this performs and what it is made of.  Also, how the Maco Puff compares to the Micro Puff (one of our favorite jackets).

Twice the Puff

The Patagonia Macro Puff has twice the insulation as the Micro Puff.  That is pretty incredible, considering the jacket only weighs around a pound! Patagonia stuffed this puffy with 135 grams of PlumaFill in the body and 90 grams in the arms.  For reference, the Patagonia Micro Puff has 65 grams of PlumaFill in the entire jacket.

PlumaFill – a legitimate down alternative

Patagonia spent years developing Plumafill and is shows.  I have been using the Micro Puff hoody since before it came out two years ago.  The Micro Puff has seen a lot of adventures in that time span and shown no signs of packing out or failing.  Aside from a few loose strands of material, but that is just normal wear and tear.

Patagonia Macro Puff is packed with plenty of PlumaFill insulation

What has most impressed me was the effectiveness of insulation and packability of the PlumaFill material. Most synthetic insulation breaks down after years of use and packing.  Though I only have two years using the Micro Puff, I think it is safe to say that it is at the top of synthetic insulations as far as durability, warmth, and packability go. Patagonia Macro Puff vs Micro Puff

While the Micro Puff is very light and packable it can not compete with the sheer warmth of the Macro Puff.  Imagine taking two Micro Puffs and merging them together.  Add in a little longer hem and a Napoleon pocket, and you basically have the Macro Puff.  You would assume that it would weigh much more, but I was surprised to find that the Macro Puff, with all the extra insulation and bells and whistles, was only 6 ounces heavier.  Mind blown.

I think that is a weight bargain for getting all that extra warmth and coverage.  The Micro Puff is $299 and the Macro Puff is $399.  Both are Fair Trade sewn.  Both have 10D nylon ripstop materials with DWR (durable water repellent) finish.  Though the Macro Puff features recycled 10D while the Micro Puff is Pertex Quantum.

Fit and function

I was testing out a size large in men for this review.  For reference, I am 205lbs, 6’1″ 45″ chest 33″ waist, 36″ arms.  The large was accurate in fit and did not feel restrictive of baggy.  The arm length is good and the elastic cuffs stay in place.  I really like the way the jacket fits and feels.

Final thoughts on Patagonia Macro Puff Hoody

I am truly impressed with the Macro Puff jacket.  This thing is super comfortable and feels good to wear it.  It is surprisingly lightweight given how much insulation it has.  The hand pockets, napoleon pocket, and internal drop pockets make this a very accommodating jacket.  The hood sinches up and keeps the wind out.  The color is very attractive as well.  I would have no problem recommending this jacket to anyone looking for a warm, synthetic jacket.  Grab one below!
