Patagonia R2 Techface Hoody – A Bomber Fleece Crosslayer

Patagonia R2 Techface Hoody – A Bomber Fleece Crosslayer
The Patagonia R2 Techface Hoody is a bomber fleece cross-layer for cold-weather conditions and gear-destroyer approved.
On my first tour of the 2019-2020 season, I put on a lightweight baselayer and the Patagonia R2 Techface Hoody and left it at that. We started out with near-zero visibility in a snowstorm above 11k feet with temps in the mid to high 20’s.

I noticed that despite generating heat from the quick pace uphill, the DWR finish and texture of the Techface pattern kept the snow from sticking and I didn’t feel the need to switch to the hard shell, even on the descent. Talk about performance out of the gate.

When it comes to these really cold starts – I usually put on a micropuffy under my shell, but sometimes I trap too much heat. On my coldest tour this season (-5 degree F to start the morning), the R2 Techface Hoody combined with the Ascensionist shell worked really well to keep me effectively warm without dumping sweat on the skin track. I was more concerned about my toes than anything else!

The stretchability and features of this Fair Trade Certified (TM) sewn fleece crosslayer go a long way for this klutz. The R2 Techface Hoody features durable high-loft double-weave fabric treated with DWR finish. The under-the-helmet hood fits well, especially with hats and stretches as needed to give you that flexibility.
The Patagonia R2 Techface Hoody also includes a left-chest pocket and two high handwarmer pockets (harness and pack-compatible!) with two interior drop-in pockets to stuff gloves or skins in. The snag-resistant cuffs with stretch knit feel real nice. For a versatile jacket that works in a variety of conditions, check out the Patagonia R2 Techface Hoody which retails for $189 and is available in both hoody and jacket versions ($169).
