Peak Design Calls Out Amazon Basics with “A Tale of Two Slings”

The mission-driven leader in everyday carry solutions reaffirms the adage, you get what you pay for.

San Francisco, CA (March 3, 2021) – Peak Design, the worldwide leader in crowdfunding and everyday carry solutions, has released a video responding to the production of a copycat version of the brand’s Everyday Sling by Amazon Basics. Entitled, “A Tale of Two Slings,” Peak Design draws distinctions between their original Everyday Sling (MSRP: $99.95), launched in 2017, and Amazon Basic’s Everyday Sling released in 2020 (MSRP: $32.99).

As an innovator of best-in-class carry solutions, and champion of socially and environmentally responsible manufacturing, Peak Design hopes its tongue-in-cheek response will remind the public that when it comes to low-quality imitations, you get what you pay for.

The original Peak Design Everyday Sling features a lifetime guarantee and is built using Blue Sign approved, 100% recycled post-consumer materials. In addition, Peak Design is a Certified B-Corporation and a founding member of Certified Climate Neutral, meaning the Everyday Sling is a responsibly manufactured, carbon-neutral product.

As noted in “A Tale of Two Slings,” Amazon Basics offers consumers a nearly identical looking bag without needing to charge customers for the intangible qualities that define the Peak Design brand. For Peter Dering, founder and CEO of Peak Design, the existence of Amazon Basics forces consumers to contemplate which values they’re willing to support via the products they purchase.

“I’d like to think that the purchaser of a Peak Design bag over the Amazon Basics bag indicates caring at a deeper level,” noted Dering. He continued, “It might be caring for the environmental journey that we are on. It might be the little bits of detail and innovation that spark joy to the user. Whatever it is, it means something to some people, and it means less to others. For every customer, this decision is up to them.”

Peak Design does believe that Amazon has infringed on their intellectual property and has contemplated avenues for legal recourse. However, for now, Peak Design decided an amusing video response would be the best format to publicly respond to Amazon and help bring delight to Peak Design’s customers and employees.

“Amazon putting the little trapezoidal patch on their bag to mimic our label is both the highest compliment, and a slap in the face,” remarks Dering. “It deserves something in return, and if that is something we could create to spark additional joy in our lives? In our customer’s lives? Then hell yes. Let the cameras roll.”

About Peak Design

Since 2010, Peak Design has been building innovative carry solutions with a simple overarching design directive: make the best things. The idea for our first product was born on a motorcycle trip through Southeast Asia and has since expanded to include a cross-functional ecosystem of bags, pouches, slings, straps, and clips.

We’ve won applause along the way, but we’re most proud of the fact that we’re 100% crowdfunded and 100% employee-owned. We’ve raised $34.4 Million through 10 Kickstarter campaigns to become the world’s most successfully crowdfunded company.

This allows Peak Design to stay investor-free and focused on the things that matter most: designing great products, fostering happy employees, and taking care of our customers and the natural environment. Learn more at peakdesign.com
