Ah, schussing. Is there any better feeling? No, we didn't make up that word. It's German or something. Point is, this is the perfect time - gear-wise - to upgrade or fill out your quiver. The latest skis and boards just dropped. Binding tech is better than ever. Even ski poles are in a renaissance. If you haven't looked at new plank(s) in a while, now's the time!
Without adding extra weight or sacrificing technical ability, Mountain Hardwear manages to significantly bump the comfort level of the standard down hoody with the StretchDown RS. If you're in the market for a down jacket, this is the one you want to buy this season.
When taking a trip into the backcountry on skis, you need some specialized equipment. Normal ski boots and bindings are designed to unify your foot and the ski. That’s fine and dandy when you’re on your way down. But, unifying your foot and ski on the way up? That makes walking hard. The solution is alpine touring gear – boots that allow your ankles to flex and bindings that release your heel to give you a natural stride. Our favorite binding right now? The Fritschi Vipec.
Another of our favorite skis at the SIA on snow demo at Copper Mountain - the 2016 Black Diamond Boundary 115 ski. Black Diamond sent us up the chair with their PR head, Sam Coffey of Backbone Media, to try out the Boundary series mounted with Fritschi's Vipec binding (which we run on our own skis). When we were at Copper Mountain for the 2015 SIA on snow demo, we put our feet into a lot of skis. The 2015 G3 Empire Carbon ski was one of our favorites. We were also interested in the G3 ION 12 binding. Thank goodness G3 mounted the ION 12 onto the Empire Carbon for demos! Click through for our impressions.
G3 let us borrow a pair of next season's (2015/2016) G3 Alpinist LT Skins. We took them up on Jones Pass to test them on some familiar ground. G3 redesigned everything for the LT - shorter, lighter plush, lighter face fabric, and new, eco-friendly DWR to keep the skins dry and glop-free. We tested them head to head with the G3 Alpinist, and Black Diamond Ascension (for control group)
