Arc’teryx Trino SL – Extra Breathable and Versatile Softshell
The Arc’teryx Trino SL $219 is a very breathable and versatile softshell that is at home on trail runs, biking, and touring. The fit and function are superb and the looks are equally at home in the city or in the mountains.
The Arc’teryx Trino SL Review
The Arc’teryx Trino SL fits the bill for 1) breathability 2) function 3) good looks 4) adaptability 5) performance. It has become one of my favorite jackets for these reasons. The last time I was this stoked on a softshell was my first Gamma MX, over 10 years ago. And I think the Trino SL is even better!
Lightweight
First, the Trino SL is much lighter – coming in at 14oz for XL. This is how it gets the “SL” in its name for Super Light. No, it is not as light as some wind shells out there. But, most of those wind shells are made of thinner, and noisier, materials. Plus, most of them do not have the same features that this jacket does.
Windproof
Next, it is windproof – thanks to the Gore-Tex Infinium membrane. The Trino stands up to the wind with ease and makes no noise in doing so. Nor does it flap around like a floppy kite. It just hangs tough and does its job. It is not waterproof, so do not count on it saving you from a deluge. But it can handle light rain and snow. Need a legit WPB shell? Extra breathable
The Gore-Tex Infinium does a great job of letting heat out, but the Arc’teryx proprietary Teslin membrane does even better at dumping the heat. The Teslin is in the underarms and takes place of traditional pit zips (and saves weight). It is remarkable how well this jacket breaths. I enjoyed it on hiking trails and while training outside. It will see a lot of use as a splitboarding touring jacket here in a few months!
Good looks
The Trino looks at home in the city as well as on the trail and in the mountains. I found myself grabbing the Trino for casual use and then relying on it for outdoor activities equally. The trim fit was spot on for my build. It is nice to be able to rely on this jacket for casual as well as active use.
Stowable hood
This feature caught me by surprise. I had been using the jacket for some time when I realized there was a snap on the collar. I rolled the hood up and snapped it closed and was impressed with the ability to stow the hood. This is a useful feature as I often do not want a hood, and it is nice to not have a hood blowing in the wind.
Fit and Function
For reference, I am 6’1″ 45″ chest 33″ waist and 36/37 arms/. The XL was a fantastic fit. I would say it was one of the best fitting jackets I have tested. The trim fit is spot on and not only looks good but performs great as well. There was no limit in the range of motion for activities. Plus it looks great in casual use. There are two zippered hand pockets and no internal pockets.
Price is fair
At $219, the Arc’teryx Trino SL is a good value. Given that it is very useful in a wide range of uses, fits great, looks awesome, and performs as advertised – the Trino is legit. The Gore-Tex Infinium is easy to care for, so this should last a long time. Add in the respected build quality of Dead Bird, and you have a winner! I have no qualms about recommending this jacket.
