Mountain Hardwear Ghost Shadow Jacket – Light and Eco-Friendly

The Mountain Hardwear Ghost Shadow is a lot like the Ghost Whisperer but features synthetic insulation (Primaloft Silver) Made from recycled materials, this is a great jacket for the price.  $250

Mountain Hardwear Ghost Shadow vs Ghost Whisperer

The new Ghost Shadow is a great option for the user who wants an ultralight jacket with synthetic insulation.  The Shadow uses PrimaLoft Silver Hi-Loft Ultra insulation that is 70% recycled.  There is 80 grams of this synthetic insulation in the jacket.

The Ghost Whisperer (on sale!) and new Ghost Whisperer 2 ($325) have a very similar styling but use 800 fill RDS down instead of synthetic.  They also have a slightly lighter fabric (10D x 10D).  The Shadow uses a 10D recycled fabric and 20D liner.

The weight of the Ghost Shadow is a few ounces heavier.  The claimed weight of the new Ghost Whisperer 2 is 8.3 oz.  The Shadow comes in at 12 oz. So, I a tad heavier but that is the trade-off with down vs synthetic.  Both are packable and still light in my book.

Environmentally Friendly Build and Materials

Mountain Hardwear Product Line Manager, Steve Adams, wanted to build upon the Ghost Whisperer line and make a more sustainable synthetic line.  Enter the Ghost Shadow line.

MH uses 100% recycled ripstop nylon and PrimaLoft Eco insulation. Other cool benefits:

  • 52% less water used in manufacturing
  • PFC-free DWR treatment
  • 39% fewer carbon emissions than other jackets
  • that is enough energy saved to charge ~840 smartphones

Fit and Function

I was using an XL for this test and feel that it was a good and generous fit.  For reference, I am 6’1″ 205lbs, 45″ chest, and 33″waist.  The Shadow fits very well over a baselayer and even over a shell if needed.  The hood is a good size and the arms were long enough for my 36/37 arms.

I like the zippered hand pockets and their placement.  I really dig the internal drop pockets as well.  You all know I always make a big deal about that 🙂 The fabric slides over other layers with ease and makes for a good mid-layer or extra insulation over a shell in a pinch.

Review of Mountain Hardwear Ghost Shadow Jacket

I think this is a very good synthetic insulation jacket.  Being made of mostly recycled fabrics is a big plus for me too.  The warmth to weight ration was actually very good.  It kind of surprised me! When not in use, the jacket can stuff up in the pocket for storage. Personally, I don’t usually do that, but it is a nice option.

If you are looking for a good insulated jacket and don’t want to go with down, then this is a great option.  At $250, it is a fair price for a good puffy.  Currently, this is only available at REI.  I will update this if it becomes available elsewhere.
