From skiing to hiking, cycling, and rafting, Colorado boasts world-class outdoor recreation opportunities.

In honor of Colorado Gives Day on December 8, here’s ten of our favorite groups who are dedicated to making outdoor recreation in the Centennial State an amazing experience for all.

Big City Mountaineers

Big City Mountaineers breaks down barriers to youth access to the outdoors by partnering with local youth agencies to provide fully-outfitted, professionally-led, no-cost backcountry trips for students.

Colorado 14ers Initiative

The Colorado 14ers Initiative (CFI) partners with the U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, local volunteer organizations, and individual donors to protect and keep accessible Colorado’s 54 fourteeners. Colorado’s peaks over 14,000 feet in elevation garner over a quarter million visitors each year.

Colorado Mountain Bike Association (COMBA)

Colorado Mountain BIke Association (COMBA) got its start in 1991 when a group of mountain bikers decided to start repairing and improving the trails they rode nearly every day. COMBA focuses on three main areas: advocacy, trail stewardship, and community involvement.

Colorado Mountain Club

The Colorado Mountain Club has been delivering conservation, education and recreational opportunities to the Colorado public since 1912. The CMC acts as a gateway to the mountains for novices and experts alike, offering an array of year-round activities, events and schools centered on outdoor recreation.

Colorado White Water

Founded in 1954, Colorado White Water was founded by a small group of whitewater enthusiasts whose mission is to promote whitewater sports and safety on the river and to educate the public about river access and conservation. The organization now has more than 500 active members.

Colorado Youth Outdoors
Established in 2001, Colorado Youth Outdoors (CYO) assists participants in building their relationships, increasing their connection to the outdoors, allowing them to spend quality time together, and increasing their sense of self-efficacy.

Friends of Berthoud Pass
Friends of Berthoud Pass Friends of Berthoud Pass (FOBP) is a grassroots collective of backcountry enthusiasts committed to preserving the legacy of public recreation at Berthoud Pass through safety, access and education. Founded in 2003 by ski patrollers and backcountry riders, the program has taught basic avalanche safety and awareness to more than 10,000 people. In 2010 FOBP launched a scholarship fund to enable volunteer instructors to pursue advanced studies in avalanche science, safety, and education.

Mountain Dreamers

Based in Summit County, Mountain Dreamers supports and advocates on behalf of immigrant communities and their families who live and work in Colorado’s largest ski tourism communities.

The Colorado Trail Foundation

The Colorado Trail Foundation builds and maintains the Colorado Trail, all 567 miles between Denver and Durango, thanks to support from volunteers and donors.

Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado
Since 1984, Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado (VOC) has engaged over 105,000 volunteers on hundreds of projects in some of Colorado’s most beloved and iconic locations. VOC projects offer volunteers a chance to learn useful skills and put in a hard day’s work constructing new trail, restoring lands damaged by flood and fire, and maintaining well-worn trails in desperate need of some TLC.
