Hoka One One Clifton Edge – Light, Fast and Super Comfy

Andrew Piotrowski

Overview- Do they look a little goofy? Yes. Are they light, fast, and super comfy? Also yes! For the past few months, I have really enjoyed putting the Clifton Edges to the test on the roads of Southern Maryland.

While I typically spend most of my time on trails the current global situation has led me to spend most of my time on the roads. This can be problematic for your body as the roads have a special way of beating you up.

Thinking back, almost every running-related injury that I ever sustained came while running roads. This is where the Clifton Edge comes in to play, the extended heal and lightweight foam helped to really reduce the wear and tear on my body while running roads.

Key Features:

Extended Heal- I like to think that 20+ years of running has perfected my stride so much that I never land heal first. However, the reality is that as I get tired I inevitably start landing heal first. The extended heal feature helps reduce the pounding on the heal and makes for a much softer landing.

Weight- These things are LIGHT! They come in at 7.25oz which is kind of ridiculous when you consider all the extra foam added to the heal.

Durability- I have put around 250 miles on them and have seen very little signs of wear. The new lightweight foam seems to be very durable and has only worn down slightly near the middle of the shoe.

Fit- I have seen a few different runners complain about the Clifton Edge having a narrow toe box. I have not found this to be the case. In most Hoka shoes I have to order a wide size or my pinky toe will wear through the side of the shoe. However, I don’t have the wide size in the Clifton Edge and have had zero issues or discomfort.

What I love- Comfort. These shoes are extremely comfortable and make me feel like I can run longer and farther without destroying my legs on the road.

What Would I change? My only complaint with these shoes is the top edge of the tongue. The tongue is very thin and needs to be pulled all the way up for optimal comfort. A couple of times I rushed putting the shoes on and the tongue got stuck lower down. This caused some rubbing and irritation on the upper section of my foot. Again, this is minor and can be resolved by pulling the tongue all the way up.

Overall this is a great shoe for road running.

He spent the majority of his early life competitively running and leisurely paddling, however after college he began focusing on learning to climb, snowboard, and backpack.
