Merrell Women’s Thermo Freeze Mid Waterproof Boots: Worth the Wait

Ever since I saw a sneak preview of Merrell’s Women’s Thermo Freeze Mid Waterproof boot (MSRP $160) at Outdoor Retailer Winter Market in January 2018, I have been eager to try them. Not only did they look awesome, but the key features caught my attention and met my criteria for the perfect winter boot.

My criteria for a multifunctional winter boot was (no pun intended) tall:

First of all, I required a winter boot that could do it all- hiking, fat biking, walking the dog, and snowshoeing for starters. Secondly, I also needed a boot that was not too heavy and available in colors other than teal, pink, or purple (I’m a gal who likes black). Third, I needed a winter boot that was available in a size smaller than a 6. Finally, I needed a boot with Vibram Arctic Grip soles.

Breathable, waterproof, and insulated, the Thermo Freeze Mid Waterproof boot not only met all my stringent criteria but knocked it out of the ballpark.

Putting them to the test

The first test was a Christmas Day hike in the Indian Peaks Wilderness. Ever since I had knee surgery over a year ago, I can sometimes be hesitant on unfamiliar terrain or scenarios where I think I might slip.

After a few timid steps, Vibram Arctic Grip helped restore my confidence and I stopped thinking about every step I was taking and focused instead on my surroundings. Even when the sun went down, my feet remained warm and I walked over a variety of terrain including snow and wet ice without a second thought.

The second test was walking my blue heeler. Because my neighborhood is notorious for not plowing streets or shoveling sidewalks, I’ve always worn nano spikes or some other form of traction device. Because of the Vibram technology, I had no problem walking the dog, even on a long stretch of icy road. I was glad to say goodbye to my nano spikes!

The third test was on a bitterly cold day where it was 12 degrees outside and I was riding my bike home after work. After the miserable bike ride, I realized my feet had been warm the entire time, whereas normally they would be frozen. Wait to go, boots!

Great for Winter Biking

In addition to the low weight superior insulation, my favorite feature of the Thermo Freeze Mid Waterproof boots is the Vibram Arctic Grip technology- especially useful when it comes to winter biking.

Prior to having Vibram technology, I have always worn nano spikes to prevent slippage if I have to suddenly put my foot down while riding my bike (both commuter and fat bike) on days I rode in extreme winter conditions.

The problem was always that once I arrived at my destination, I’d have to remove the traction device for fear of slipping (ironic) or damaging the floor. Having to remove and later put on traction devices in inclement weather was tedious.

The Vibram Arctic Grip technology eliminated that process. I can bike to work or do errands without having to pause and remove nano spikes. For regular bike commuters, convenience is king- removing any ride preparation step (affixing lights, etc.) is a big deal.
