Hot and sticky weather has now descended on the East Coast. The humidity-fueled onslaught of summer air will inevitably replace the near-perfect (for running) spring temps and make running a bit more painful.  However, by selecting the right gear we can make summer running a bit more comfortable.

Nathan Sports Men’s Rise Short Sleeve Shirt Review

This is where the new line of running apparel from Nathan Sport comes in! Nathan has long been a top choice for hydration packs, bottles, and illumination gear and is well known in the running community. Their recent rollout of running apparel is exciting and I am pumped to have tested the Rise Shirt for the past month or so.

I have been training for my first 100k trail race and used this shirt for many of my training runs. I have used it as both a layer in cold weather and worn it by itself in much warmer weather. Overall, I have been really happy with the shirt’s performance, durability, and feel.

Overview – The Rise Short Sleeve Shirt is designed to keep you cool and comfortable when training or running in warm weather. It features a moisture-wicking material and a back ventilation panel to help remove heat. I have found that the back panel does a great job of keeping my back cool and dry and is also comfortable when wearing a hydration pack.

Key features:

Materials- The main fabric is a super soft mixture of Polyester and Tencel.  This makes the shirt very soft while also keeping it fairly light. 

Color- Currently it comes in 4 different colors; white, black, blue, and maroon. The white (moonchime color on the website) might be the best for extreme heat!

Fit- I typically wear a Men’s medium and found the Medium version to be a little loose-fitting. I will likely size down on my next Nathan apparel purchase.

Safety- There is a reflective Nathan Logo on the runner’s right side.

Favorite Feature- the large back panel really does an amazing job of keeping things cool. 

What would I change- I would love to see a couple more reflective areas to help with visibility on the roads.

Andrew is a trail runner, climber, paddler, snowboarder, marketer, and most importantly a dog dad. Andrew grew up in suburban Philadelphia and now lives on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.

While he lives pretty far from the mountains, he puts a heavy focus on preparing for them and inspiring others to do the same. He first fell in love with the mountains on family trips to the White Mountains and the Adirondacks. He spent the majority of his early life competitively running and leisurely paddling, however after college he began focusing on learning to climb, snowboard, and backpack.

Over the past ten years since then, he has been fortunate enough to gain some amazing experiences exploring North America. Some of the most memorable thus far are alpine climbing in the Sierra, trail running in Alberta, learning to splitboard in NH, countless days hiking in the Catskills, or a plethora of mellow days paddling the Chesapeake Bay with friends.

When he can’t be in the mountains Andrew is often running or hiking with his favorite training partners, his two rescue dogs Calvin and Enzo. Andrew is also a self-proclaimed gear junkie and confessed that his gear loft is the most organized place in his home.
