Patagonia Macro Puff Quilt – Incredibly Light and Packable Quilt

The Patagonia Macro Puff Quilt ($250) features PlumaFill synthetic insulation that acts a lot like down, yet performs when wet. This quilt is very light and packable.

Queen sized packable quilt

The Macro Puff quilt is actually a little larger than a queen size mattress – 83″ x 69″, whereas a queen mattress is 80″ x 60″.  So, this is a sizeable quilt! This makes a great insulated quilt for couples.  I used it in our RoofNest tent on several occasions as well at a cabin and at home.

Most quilts we test are much larger when packed.  So, they don’t always get packed in our truck, unless we know we are going camping.  With the super packable size of te Macro Puff Quilt, it is easy to always have packed in our kit, ready to be used at any moment.

PlumFill insulation

I am a fan of PlumaFill insulation.  The first item I tested that uses this was the Micro Puff $299 (review here) and it blew me away.  It packed up just like a down puffy, yet works when wet. Plus, it was easy to care for. In fact, I am still using it!

The next item I tested using the PlumaFill insulation is the Macro Puff $399 (review here) which is basically the same amount of insulation as this quilt, just in jacket form.  So, it is a very warm jacket!

The bottom line, I have used the heck out of the PlumaFill garments and they are still in great shape.  So, I am a big fan of this insulation. It still lofts up well and does not seem to degrade from repeated packing.

There are 135 grams of PlumaFill in the quilt.  So about 4.8 ounces.  The amount of a nice belay jacket, like the Macro Puff above.

Super soft and light material

The face fabric is 10D Pertex Quantum with a clean DWR coating.  So, it can handle being outside and some moisture.  Great for hanging out at camp in light snow or drizzle.  The material feels good against the skin and moves freely over other materials, which is nice.

Webbing loops

I appreciate the loops in each of the 4 corners.  This is great when you want to stake the quilt down for a picnic or want to air it out after using it for the night. You could use these to keep the quilt attached to a sleeping pad as well.

Fair Trade and bluesign approved

Patagonia keeps leading the way by setting a great example of best practices. Once again, they use Fair Trade certified sewing and bluesign approved fabrics.

Patagonia Macro Puff Quilt Review

I really like the Macro Puff Quilt as it is versatile and packs up small.  I would not rely on this as my only insulation for camping unless you are in warm weather and into ultralight backpacking.

Rather, I would recommend this as an extra layer of insulation for backpacking or camping.  Or for van life, and even home life.  I found myself using this often.  Again, not by itself, but in addition to other insulation.

For example, one night of testing was in the 20-degree range.  I use a 2 person sleeping bag when using our RTT.  With the addition of the Macro Puff Quilt, the dogs and I were more than warm with the combination.

Other instances where the quilt was handy was around camp as the sun was setting and stars were coming out.  Or on movie night and snuggling up at home.

With the small size when packed and lightweight (27 ounces), it makes it easy to keep it with our go-to kit.  It packs up smaller than many sleeping bags and can boost the power of a sleeping bag and/or provide comfort for 2 or more (humans or dogs LOL).
