Thermarest NeoAir Topo Luxe Sleeping Pad – Supreme Comfort for 3 Season Backpacking

Thermarest NeoAir Topo Luxe Sleeping Pad – Supreme Comfort for 3 Season Backpacking
The new Thermarest NeoAir Topo Luxe Sleeping Pad combines a very comfortable experience with lightweight and packable design. Featuring 4″ of cushion and an R-Value of 3.7. Making this a great sleeping pad for 3 season use.
Best of both worlds
We have tested many sleeping pads and several from Thermarest. It seems that you either have very lightweight and packable or much more sizeable and comfortable. We don’t use UL sleeping pads with anything lower than an R-Value of 2 as it can get cold here in Colorado. You can see some of those reviews here.
What I look for in a sleeping pad is comfort, size, insulation, and packability. The Topo Luxe hits all those marks. It packs up small enough to backpack with. It weights 2.5llb for the large size. I prefer the long wide versions of sleeping pads, for what it is worth.
What really impressed me is that this sleeping pad has 4″ of cushion, in such a packable size. I am a fairly heavy guy (205lbs) and appreciate the extra cushion. The only other mattress that comes close to this in comfort, is the Thermarest Mondo King. I have that one and use it mostly at home or for guests as it is too big to take backpacking.
Easy to inflate
The NeoAir Topo Luxer comes with a regular stuff sack as well as a handy pump sack. The pump sack is going to change your game! It is not rocket surgery, but it is impressive in how simple and effective it is. Simply attach the pump sack to the “in” valve and harness the air. I give it a puff or two to get it started in calm weather. Within 12-14 inflations (2-3 minutes) you have a fully inflated sleeping pad.

Warm enough for most 3 season camping
With an R-Value of 3.7, you can use this sleeping pad into decent temps. The lowest I had it was 32 degrees at 10k feet. I like to sleep cold, so my opinion might be off by a few degrees. Conservatively, I would recommend this down to 40 degrees or so. That will probably be sufficient for most camping trips in most states in months that do not have snow.
Thermarest nailed the insulation game by developing a Triangular Core Matrix. This is not down, nor is it synthetic insulation. Rather, they use patterns of metallic layers to reflect heat back to you.
I have been using various NeoAir sleeping pads for years, and this technology keeps getting better. There is a slight crinkle sound to it, but nothing compared to the first few years of this technology. It keeps the weight and packability down, as compared to….. down 🙂
