Labor Day Sale Camp Gear Guide 2019

Labor Day sales are starting and can mean big savings on camping gear.  Here are some of our recommendations for tents, sleeping bags, backpacks, shoes and more!

REI Labor Day Deals

Lets start with REI and some of their deals on camp gear.  We are big fans of REI as (for most people at least) you can go into the store and make sure items fit and are what you actually want.  They have a good return  policy.  Plus, they have 20% off on REI-Outlet too!

REI Half Dome 4 Plus $229

This is a great deal on a family friendly car camping / light backpacking tent. 30% off the usual price of $330. Coming in at 7 1/2 lbs and made of lightweight yet burly materials (70D floor and 40D canopy).  This sizable (58 sq ft) tent has plenty of room for 4 people.  Measuring 92 x 92 x 48, this is quite comfy.  If you need a smaller tent, definitely check out the Half Dome 3 Plus $195 and Half Dome 2 Plus $160. Personally, I started off with the Half Dome 2 Plus years ago and loved it.  For the price of $160, you get a 5 lb tent that will last you many adventures!

Sleeping pads

Big Agnes Insulated Air Core Ultra Sleeping Pad $105

I am a big fan of these sleeping pads.  Currently, we are using the double wide version along with a Big Agnes Dream Island Double Sleeping Bag $269.  This combo has been great for temps at, or below freezing here in Colorado.  The insulated Air Core is updated this year with more robust materials.  Seems to inflate a bit faster as well.

Tepui Rooftent

Roof tents are a big purchase.  Much more so than a car camping or backpacking tent.  Though they do offer some pretty cool advantages.  My wife and I are loving our Roofnest and find it to be very warm and stable.  We tested out the Tepui a few years back and found it to be a great set up as well.  Currently, REI is offering 15% off these roof tent.  If you are in the market for one, this might be the best time to grab one! There are a lot of Granite Gear backpacks on sale.  But this one would make a great workhorse of a backpack. 60L is a sweet spot for most backpackers.  From overnighters to extended use, and at a fair price too.

Black Diamond Tents

This is a great time to grab a 4 season tent from Black Diamond!  Most of them are 25% off.  I have used and loved so many of these tents.  One of my wife and I’s favorite is the Bombshelter $750 Usually a $1000 tent, this is a great time to grab one.

Sure, it is overkill for almost everything most campers would encounter.  But, when the crap hits the fan and you find yourself camping in a blizzard or monsoon, this tent can save your ass.  We camped in nice summer conditions, to downright apocalyptic rain and snow storms.  It was our wedding gift to each other and has served us well!

Black Diamond Hilight 3 Tent $330

This is becoming my new go-to tent.  The version we are testing is actually a green color (see pic below) but it is the same, awesome tent.  I have been waiting years for BD to make a 3 person version of this tent.  I would recommend grabbing one now!
