Rossignol Vercors Trail Shoe Review: 118 Years of Mountain Expertise, Now on the Trail

The Vercors is not a mere experiment. Rossignol recently launched its first trail shoe, the Vezor, at UTMB in Chamonix, established a professional trail running team, and now introduces the Vercors as the flagship of its Spring-Summer 2026 collection. While the Vezor excels on race day, the Venosk caters to everyday miles, the Vercors is designed specifically for endurance runners seeking cushioning, protection, and comfort that can withstand long days. Crafted in Rossignol’s design lab in Montebelluna, Italy, the same region renowned for its ski boot and sport footwear design, the Vercors embodies the company’s heritage. The Vercors’ pitch revolves around speed, precision, and control on technical ground. However, this claim is not unique to the trail category. Most shoes in the market either prioritize softness and forgiveness or firmness and speed. The Vercors, in contrast, refuses to choose a side, making it the most intriguing aspect of this shoe.

Fit: size up if your feet run wide

I increased my shoe size by half a size to accommodate my wide feet, and that proved to be the ideal fit. The shoes provided a snug and comfortable fit throughout the midfoot without pinching across the forefoot, which is crucial when you’re running for hours and your feet start to swell. If you have wider feet, I highly recommend going up the half size as I did. You’ll be glad you did on the back half of a long run.

The midsole is the story

I entered the store with skepticism about the midsole, but I emerged thoroughly impressed. This was the shoe’s most surprising feature.

The midsole is Rossignol’s E+FOAM, and it provides genuine support over long distances without becoming mushy or ineffective when the trail becomes challenging. On the smooth, runnable sections of Cupid and Grizzly, it held me up and maintained my efficiency. However, when the ground transformed into talus and loose scree, the E+FOAM remained composed and stable beneath my feet.

Unlike many shoes that cushion you on the climb, the Vercors maintains its shape and keeps me firmly planted.

Two key engineering elements contribute to this remarkable balance. A medium-density anti-torsion insert integrated into the midsole provides the platform with a backbone, enabling the shoe to resist twisting when I land on uneven rock. Additionally, the Diapazon (tuning fork?) Shield X-LT plate sits beneath my feet to protect my feet from bruising while smoothing my foot roll through each stride. Together, these components allow the E+FOAM to cushion me effectively without compromising its performance in technical sections. Achieving this delicate balance is a challenge that many brands discuss, but the Vercors truly delivers it.

Built to take a beating

The upper earned my trust swiftly. Rossignol calls it Dragonfly Light, a breathable and reinforced upper that surprisingly outperforms its weight. I leaned heavily on its toughness.

I used these hands-on-rock, foot-jammed-in-cracks scrambling, and the upper held up remarkably well. It didn’t blow out, tear, or have soft spots that gave way under abrasion. I also encountered rain during these runs, and the Vercors performed exceptionally well in the wet without becoming soggy or losing footing on slippery rock.

In such situations, durability surpasses any specification. The fact that the upper is constructed almost entirely from recycled materials, including 100% recycled vamp and 80% recycled liner, and still withstands such abuse speaks volumes about the advancements in recycled fabrics.

Grip you can trust

Underfoot, the abrasion-resistant DuraGrip Ultra outsole and its 4mm lugs performed exceptionally well across the diverse range of Front Range conditions, including loose dirt, exposed rock, and the root-laced sections lower down. Rossignol’s tread design incorporates a variety of lugs, each with a specific purpose: brake, stability, transition, traction winglet, and propel. The intent behind this design is evident, as the lugs provide a firm grip when braking or pushing off, while also allowing for a smooth transition. The Vercors consistently delivered the desired traction, never leaving me feeling hesitant. In technical terrain, hesitation can be a significant obstacle to speed, and the Vercors’ traction ensured that I could maintain a steady pace.

 

The Rossignol Vercors is an ideal shoe for endurance runners who push the limits of their performance in challenging mountain conditions. It delivers on its marketing claims, weighing only 290 grams, making it lightweight and maneuverable. At the same time, it offers sufficient protection to withstand the rough terrain. The shoe’s balanced design is truly remarkable considering its price point. The E+FOAM midsole impressed me, the Dragonfly Light upper proved to be incredibly durable, and the DuraGrip outsole never failed to deliver on its performance.

Rossignol’s decision to transition from snow to trail running is a significant move for a brand that has been deeply rooted in the mountains since 1907. At $160, the Vercors offers an exceptional value proposition, with a commitment to using recycled materials in its construction. For a brand with a history of excellence in the mountains, the trail was always destined to feel like home.
