Detailed Review

The Royal Robbins Salathe Sun Hoodie is not just a basic sun shirt.  Its got an updated styling – slightly cropped and boxy.  And it offers mosquito protection, thanks to the MPT construction of the garment.

I find that when Royal Robbins indicates that an item, particularly a shirt, is a relaxed fit, that’s an indication to me that I should size down.  The Royal Robbins Salathe Sun Hoodie was just that:  I am a size medium according to the size guide and I preferred the fit of the size small hoodie.

I’ve been wearing the Royal Robbins Salathe Sun Hoodie on runs and hikes with temperatures in the 60s and a lot of wind.  The 100% recycled polyester ripstop is very lightweight, so light that I found the light color I received for testing (lime cream) was a bit see through. That doesn’t really bother me, but if you don’t want something slightly sheer, then order one of the darker colors.

While wind protection isn’t a listed benefit of the Royal Robbins Salathe Sun Hoodie, I found it to be nicely windproof.  It’s a great option as a single layer (for sun protection) or as a lightweight windbreaker.

I wear a running vest when I run or hike, and I was impressed with the durability of the 100% recycled polyester ripstop. During my testing, the Royal Robbins Salathe Sun Hoodie didn’t show any signs of wear from my pack.

As a sunshirt, I think it offered great protection.  It’s early spring with summer vibes in the Denver area, and I haven’t been diligent about applying sunscreen. Even 30 minutes outside in short sleeves can add color to my skin.  The Royal Robbins Salathe Sun Hoodie, with a UPF 40+ rating offered comfortable and breathable sun protection.

The sleeves are cuffed with elastic and do not have thumb holes or extend over the tops of the hands.  This isn’t a deal breaker for me, but I know that some people desire hand protection in a sunshirt.

The bottom hem has a cinch cord, which I’ve found to be really handy.  On warmer days or when I need more ventilation, I leave the cord all the way open.  But on windy days, I cinch the cord down to prevent any wind from coming up the shirt.  It’s a nice design feature that, I imagine, also really helps in keeping bugs from encroaching inside the shirt from the bottom hem.

The hood of the Royal Robbins Salathe Sun Hoodie is oversized.  For me, it worked well when I was wearing a hat with a brim.  But when the hat came off, the hood was definitely too big, and there isn’t a cinch cord to customize the fit.

Closing Thoughts

The Royal Robbins Salathe Sun Hoodie is more than just a sunshirt.  It’s a fun top that’s multipurpose with sun protection, wind protection, and bug protection.  The shirt is also very lightweight, making it easy to add to your pack for the day ahead.

The Royal Robbins Salathe Sun Hoodie is available for women in five colorways with sizes ranging from XS to XL.

She is even known to combine her love of camping and cycling and go off on solo 24 hour overnight bikepacking trips in the mountains of Colorado. In addition to bikes, she teaches yoga, lifts weights, skis, SUPs and has recently purchased a campervan.

Fall and winter 2025 will bring Erin to the “Adventure Side”, with many camping, vanlife, bikepacking, and mountain bike rides. Once the snow flies, she can be find resort skiing, fat biking, and triathlon training (inside and outside).
2026 will bring a National Championship Cross Tri race, a National Championship Road Sprint and Olympic Distance race, and hopefully a chance to represent Team USA once again in 2027 in Edmonton, Canada. She’ll also save lots of room for adventure time with her friends and husband.
When not adventuring, she can be found on a sunny patio somewhere, drinking beers with her husband.
