Zamberlan Tofane NW GTX RR Men’s Norwegian Welt Hiking Boots
Review by Will Trail
Initial Impressions
The Zamberlan Tofane NW GTX RR Men’s Norwegian Welt Hiking Boots sit in the upper echelon of traditional backpacking boots — a premium Italian made leather boot that combines high end construction with modern waterproofing and rugged outdoor performance. As part of Zamberlan’s Norwegian welted lineup, these boots are built not just to last through miles of rough terrain but also to be resoled when needed, extending their life even further.

Out of the box, the Tofane NW GTX® RR Men’s Norwegian Welt Hiking Boots feel substantial and well crafted. These are fantastic looking boots in the “Waxed Brick” colorway. The full grain, waxed Hydrobloc® leather uppers are 2.8 mm thick yet supple, and the classic styling looks as sharp on the trail as it does around camp. The GORE-TEX® Performance Comfort membrane provides waterproof, breathable protection, which is essential for longer treks, cold wet weather, or unpredictable mountain conditions. Additionally, the Vibram® NorTrack outsole provides a sturdy platform that the boot is built upon.
From the first moments you see them, it’s clear these are not lightweight trail runners. They show a clear commitment to durability and protection over speed or minimalism, and the investment in construction quality is visible in every stitch and material choice.
Detailed Review
Fit & Comfort
I spent some time before ordering these boots to get the sizing dialed for my feet. I tried on other similarly designed Zamberlan boots and followed the online manufacturer recommendations for foot measurement. Ultimately, I decided on Men’s size 10 US. In other footwear, I wear Men’s 10.5–11 US, but as we know, sizing varies across brands and styles.
These boots fit very well with no heel lift, a good lacing system to wrap around the ankle and foot, and a toe box that is roomy enough during movement but not overly loose. That said, fit can vary, so I would recommend taking the time to find the proper size for your personal needs.

Unlike many robustly constructed backpacking boots that require long break-in periods, the Tofane feels comfortable fairly quickly, with minimal break-in needed. It took me roughly 10 days of wearing them to feel fully broken in. The leather and liners conform reasonably quickly, reducing early irritation and the risk of blisters. Ankle support is top notch when traversing uneven terrain while still allowing the right amount of flex during normal walking movements.
Construction & Materials
The defining feature of the Tofane is its Norwegian welted construction, where the midsole is stitched to the boot’s upper rather than just glued. This technique greatly enhances longevity and allows resoling, making these boots a true multi-year investment. The midsole consists of a double-density PU wedge that provides cushioning during normal walking.
The Hydrobloc® waxed Tuscan full-grain leather uppers are pretreated for water resistance on top of the inner GORE‑TEX® membrane, enhancing protection in wet conditions. A protective rubber toe rand shields against rocks and trail debris.

Performance & Traction
Traction from the Vibram® NorTrack outsole is solid across mixed terrain providing confident downhill steps and reliable grip on dirt, rock, pavement and uneven surfaces. Scrambling over exposed rock posed no problem, either ascending or descending. I did not get the chance to try them in deep snow, but I feel they would offer good traction as long as there was no solid ice present, which would challenge most shoes without spikes. The lug spacing allows dirt to shed easily, with minimal buildup unless encountering very sticky mud. The rubber has held up well, with very minimal wear so far.

Weight & Walk Feel:
As with any leather boot, there’s a noticeable weight trade-off compared to lighter hiking shoes. This weight contributes to durability and ankle support, but may fatigue legs faster than lighter options. I would call them “reassuringly robust”, yet I never noticed the weight after hours of wearing them nor did my feet feel overly tired. A new set of boots takes time to adjust to, and these did, but not excessively. The break-in period mainly helped me get used to how the boots behaved on the trail.
Waterproofing & Weather Protection
The GORE‑TEX® Performance Comfort membrane delivers reliable waterproof protection, keeping feet dry even after hikes in slushy snow or wet grass. Breathability is better than many leather boots thanks to the combination of modern membrane technology and thoughtful lining materials. I used these boots in temperatures from 10s–80s °F and my feet never felt overheated or cold. Proper socks help, and I used both synthetic and wool blends in testing. As these boots are not insulated, I would recommend appropriate footwear for truly frigid conditions.
Boot Care
A pair of boots like these should be viewed as an investment and not a disposable item. After the leather is broken in, these boots will provide many years of use. Once the soles need replacement, the Vibram® outsoles are easily resoled, as detailed by Zamberlan here. Proper maintenance of the leather is necessary, which involves periodic leather wipe down with a damp cloth, air drying and then applying Zamberlan’s Hydrobloc® leather conditioning cream. The process is simple and effective for prolonging the boot’s lifespan.
Closing Thoughts
After extended testing, the Zamberlan Tofane NW GTX® RR Men’s Norwegian Welt Hiking Boots stand out as a proper footwear for serious outdoor adventurers. The combination of classic craftsmanship, waterproof performance, and resolable construction makes it a top selection for backpackers, hunters, mountaineers, and outdoor professionals who value longevity and protection.
Pros:
- Excellent build quality and craftsmanship
- Comfortable out of the box which improves with use
- Norwegian welt construction allows resoling and long life
- Waterproof and breathable with full‑grain leather + GORE‑TEX®
- Strong Vibram® traction on multiple surfaces
- Protective toe rand
Cons:
- Heavier compared to modern lightweight boots
- Higher price point
If durability, comfort and long‑term value are at the top of your priority list, the Zamberlan Tofane NW GTX® RR Men’s Norwegian Welt Hiking Boots deliver an exceptional combination of quality construction and performance that is hard to beat. I view these boots as an investment and expect them to provide many years of use when properly cared for. After many days of testing, I noticed a few minor scuffs and was initially disappointed, but I soon saw them as added character and part of the boot’s story. Yes, these sit on the pricier end of the spectrum, but that upfront cost delivers lasting value, and they are most definitely “Trail Rated.”
