Thermarest Vela Double 20F Two Person Quilt – Super Comfortable for Two

The Thermarest Vela Double 20F Two Person Quilt $379 is a fantastic option to save weight and space over a two-person sleeping bag. Featuring 650 RDS water resistant down and ultralight materials, this has you covered 🙂

Thermarest Vela Double 20F Two Person Quilt Review

I have used the Thermarest Vela Double 32F two-person quilt already (review here), so I was aware of how the build quality and how it worked.  The 20F version features even more of the Nikwax water-resistant 650 RDS down (1lb 15oz to be exact). This allows it to push down another 10-15 degrees in warmth.  The coldest I used this was 25 degrees by itself, but I pushed it down into the teens with the addition of another down quilt (Thermarest Ramble Down Blanket – review here)

Packs up small

Being that this is a quilt and not a sleeping bag, it packs up much smaller than a 2 person sleeping bag.  It comes with a non-compression stuff sack and easily fits into the 9×16″ bag. You could probably squoosh it down even further using an actual compression sack. This makes it ideal for backpackers or anyone looking to save some space.

Lightweight

Again, being that this is a quilt and not a sleeping bag has its advantages here as well.  The entire two-person quilt weighs in at 2lb 13oz. That is a lot less than two separate sleeping bags or a two-person sleeping bag. By giving up the underside and zippers, you are saving quite a bit of weight.

Foot box keeps the quilt secure

At first, I was not sure about using a quilt as I assumed it was going to not stay in place.  I was wrong!  The generous foot box does a great job of keeping the quilt in place on our rooftop tent mattress.  Then I tucked one side under the mattress and we had a secure and cozy two-person (and two dogs) sleeping system.

How I used the Thermarest Vela Double 20F Two Person Quilt

I used the Vela 20 in our Roofnest Sparrow XL tent (review here) on several winter camping trips.  On nights that got below 25F, I did add an additional quilt as I mentioned above.  We have plenty of room in the rooftop tent, so this is something we do often.  It keeps the dogs warm and my wife happy.

I appreciate the water-resistant down as we do get some condensation in the tent when there is little or no wind.  I feel a lot better knowing the down is not going to wet out on us! The 20D material has withstood many nights of sleeping with our dogs.  The 650 down does a good job of lofting up and keeping us warm.

Bonus – Thermarest Compressible Pillows!

We have been using, and loving, the Thermarest Compressible pillows ($25-35) As you could see in the video, we have several of them.  They pack up small and unfold to provide the best camping pillow comfort I have found.  No need to inflate anything, simply unfold the pillow and use them!

Made in the USA

As with all the Thermarest gear we have tested, the Vela 20F and Compressible Pillows are made with care in the USA.  This is awesome as it reduces the carbon footprint, supports our economy, and is nice to support friends in the state of Washington.  This is not an anti-other country thing, at all!  In fact, I am all for supporting companies of your home country, as I am sure you are as well.

All in all, this is a great two-person sleeping solution that can save you some weight and keep things simple!
