Samaya Ultra 35 Backpack – Ultra Light and Ready for Adventure
Luke Cunningham
While exploring the outdoors of Colorado, I rely heavily on my gear to perform in extreme conditions. The Samaya Ultra 35 Backpack, which happened to win an ISPO award in 2022, has quickly become my go-to choice for smaller objectives in the backcountry.
This backpack was designed in the French Alps with precision and versatility to meet the demands of the terrain of the Colorado Rockies.

One of the first things that caught my attention was the weight and durability of the Samaya Ultra 35 Backpack. Made from high-quality materials, aluminum frame, and Dyneema construction it comes in at an equipped weight of 840g and can withstand the harsh elements of ice climbing and and mountaineering. The design and engineering ensure that this backpack can handle the rigors of my outdoor pursuits without showing signs of wear and tear.

The size of the backpack is perfect for my needs. The 35-liter capacity, top loaded pack, is a great balance between being large enough to carry all my gear for a day or two, yet not too bulky to hinder my movements. One of the standout features of the Samaya Ultra 35 Backpack is its versatility.
The design of the pack allows me to customize the backpack to my needs. The attachment points and gear loops are strategically placed, allowing me to carry ice axes, crampons, ropes, skis/snowboard and other equipment with ease. The compression straps help to stabilize the load and keep it balanced, ensuring that the backpack doesn’t sway or shift during technical maneuvers. This back may not be for everyone.

With an MSRP of $550 it may push a few people in another direction but so far from my experience it’s been a worthy investment. Included in the price tag of the pack is a ski rack, ice axe holder, aluminum frame, EVA back, belly strap, chest strap, and helmet holder.
The only knock I have on the pack so far are the attachment buckles on the side compression straps. I’ve noticed the loops can be a bit finnicky getting on and off but in a way it makes sure they are secure enough to not come undone during your adventure.
I highly recommend the Samaya Ultra 35 Backpack to anyone seeking a high-performance, ultralight backpack for their ice climbing, mountaineering adventures. Its design makes it a reliable option in extreme outdoor conditions. With its ample storage space, comfortable fit, and rugged construction, this backpack has become an essential part of my outdoor gear arsenal.
