I got to take the Thermarest Hyperion 20 Sleeping Bag out for a whirl last week near Mesa Verde National Park. The first thing I noticed about the Hyperion 20F/-6C was its weight and compact size.

Thermarest Hyperion 20 Sleeping Bag review

My recent 26-mile backpacking trip over four mountain passes with 8,000 feet of elevation gain is still fresh on my mind. During that trip, I quickly learned my pack was too heavy. My former backpacking sleeping bag is about twice as big as the Hyperion 20F/-6C (and I used to think it was small).

I must say, I was a bit skeptical about whether such a small, light bag would keep me warm during cold October nights in the mountains, but despite my doubts, I was very warm. The only cold thing was my face! The ergonomic shape allowed me to zip it around my head, keeping my neck warm.

The double-sided zipper made it very easy to do this as well. It rained on us each night and even dripped in our tent a bit (we clearly need a new one), but the down is treated with Nikwax, which creates durable water repellency and allowed the bag to keep its insulation despite getting wet.

One morning I woke up to find my sleeping bag wet on top, but I was still dry inside. It has 900-fill down with 70% of the down on the top and sides and 30% on the back, giving you the most warmth where you need it.

One of my favorite features is the straps on the back of the bag that connects to your sleeping pad (known as the synergy link). One of my pet peeves is sliding down my sleeping pad and waking up crumpled at the bottom. It made a major difference to have the connection between the bag and the pad.

It was so easy to pack up my sleeping bag in the morning into the compression sack. I am 5’5” and used a regular-sized back that fit me perfectly. And did I mention I LOVE the color? I highly recommend the Hyperion 20F/-6C if you want to stay warm during the spring through fall while packing ultra-light.

Then she found the mountains of Colorado (and met her husband and adventure buddy). They satisfied her need for adventure with never-ending opportunities to explore alpine lakes, mountain passes, and rugged trails. It may seem that she’s finally “settled” down, but she is often outside scrambling over boulders or setting up camp in the woods.

The more Abbey adventures, the more she recognizes the importance of quality gear. Gear can make the difference between blisters and a sore back and the memory of an epic adventure.
