YETI Silo 6G Water Cooler – Keeps Your Water from Freezing

YETI Silo 6G Water Cooler – Keeps Your Water from Freezing
The YETI Silo 6G is a 6-gallon water cooler system that is great for Overlanding and basecamp. I used it to keep water from freezing during winter camping. That might sound weird, but it works very well for this!
YETI Silo 6G Water Cooler
I have been looking for a way to keep water from freezing while winter camping and splitboarding. I usually use thermoses and vacuum insulated water bottles, but even those can freeze overnight when temps get well below freezing.
I was watching The Fifty with Cody Townsend and there was an episode where he shows what is in his set up. In there was the YETI Silo 6G water cooler! He used it to keep water from freezing on cold nights. Bingo! I reached out to YETI to work with them on this review and see if I could find the cooler helpful for this as well.

Cody Townsend and me at SIA
I met Cody at SIA 2014 and really liked his personality and humor. He was actually the first professional athlete I interviewed. So, I already had high regard for him and how he approaches the mountains. Time to see if the Silo 6G is legit!

Overbuilt YETI style
Just like everything we test from YETI, the Silo 6G is overbuilt and made to last. This is a great quality to have. The cooler is hefty and strong. It looks badass too! I like that the two opening handles are stretchy rubber, not hard plastic. This makes it easy to use with gloves on.

The Silo comes in at 17lbs. Add in 6 gallons of water and you are looking at a substantial 65lbs! I opted to fill it halfway for the testing. My logic was that I would be able to hear the water sloshing around when I was driving as well as save 24lbs of weight.

I filed it halfway up and left it in the bed of our 4Runner for over a month. Temps got well below freezing on most days. In fact, there were several occasions where the temps got below 0 degrees F. I took the Silo 6G winter camping several times and was able to get water for the dogs and myself each time.

Works as planned!
I was only able to get the water to partially freeze on a few days. Keep in mind that temps did get below 0 degrees F on several occasions. Still, the water did not freeze all the way through. I was able to get plenty of usable water for backcountry ski and splitboard missions.

finally a little ice in the YETI Silo 6G Water Cooler
Despite the cold temps and non-stop use, the ice was only 1/4″ thick, if that. I was able to break it with my finger as you can see in the pic above. I am impressed!! On the day of the review video it was -4 F outside – at 9am. I am not sure what the temperatures were overnight, but the water was still fully functional (as you can see and hear in the video above).

-4 F
Who is the Yeti Silo 6G Water Cooler for?
Besides winter campers and winter sports people, the Sio 6G would be ideal for keeping water cool for summer adventures as well. It is also awesome for nomadic folks and overlanders. Sure, there are cheaper water coolers out there, but if you are reading this review, I have a feeling you already appreciate YETI and what they build. For that, you will not be disappointed in the Silo 6G.
