At Engearment, honest gear reviews are the foundation of everything we do. This page explains exactly how we operate, how we’re compensated, and what you can trust when you read or watch our reviews.
How We Get the Gear We Review
Most of the products we review are provided to us by brands and their PR representatives at no cost, for testing and evaluation purposes. This is standard industry practice for editorial gear review outlets. Receiving a product for free does not guarantee a positive review, and it does not make our reviews sponsored content.
Brands do not pay us to review their products. They do not see our reviews before publication, they do not approve or edit our content, and they have no editorial control over what we say. Our testers evaluate gear in real-world conditions — in the mountains, on the trail, and in daily use — and report their honest findings, positive and negative.
When a product has been provided to us for review, we disclose that in the review itself.
Affiliate Links
Engearment participates in affiliate programs, including AvantLink, Impact, and the Amazon Associates Program. Some links on our website and in our YouTube video descriptions are affiliate links, which means we may earn a small commission if you click through and make a purchase — at no additional cost to you.
Affiliate commissions help fund our independent testing and keep Engearment running. Which retailers we link to has no influence on our review conclusions. We recommend products because our testers believe in them, not because of commission rates.
As an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases.
Sponsored Content
Sponsored content is content a brand has paid us to create or publish. This is fundamentally different from our editorial reviews, and we treat it differently:
- Our standard gear reviews are not sponsored. No brand pays for a review, and no payment can buy a favorable one.
- If we ever publish paid or sponsored content, it will be clearly and conspicuously labeled as such (e.g., “Sponsored” or “Paid Partnership”) in accordance with FTC guidelines.
- Paid placements will never be presented as independent reviews. That is a bright line for us.
YouTube and Social Media
The same standards apply to our YouTube channel and social media. Video descriptions containing affiliate links include a disclosure statement, and any paid partnership would be identified using the platform’s paid promotion tools in addition to a verbal or written disclosure.
FTC Compliance
This disclosure is provided in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s guidelines concerning the use of endorsements and testimonials in advertising (16 CFR Part 255).
