Brooks x Nomadix Ghost Trail Shoe
Review by Will Trail
Initial Impressions
The updated Brooks x Nomadix Ghost Trail shoes takes the well known Ghost platform and adapts it for off road use, creating a versatile option for runners who spend time on gravel paths, groomed trails, and mixed terrain. Rather than being a full on technical trail shoe, it leans into comfort and consistency, bringing a road shoe feel to lighter trail environments. I was particularly interested in how this hybrid design would perform across both pavement and dirt.

At a glance, the shoe looks familiar to the Ghost pavement line, with a more rugged outsole and a reinforced upper to handle off-road conditions. The limited edition Nomadix collaboration adds a unique visual touch without being overly loud, giving the shoe a clean but distinct look in the Coconut/Black/Coyote colorway.
The Brooks Ghost Trail uses DNA LOFT v3 cushioning, a nitrogen infused foam that balances softness and durability. Paired with a TrailTack rubber outsole and a breathable engineered mesh upper, the setup is designed to deliver a smooth, protective ride without overcomplicating things. The result is a consistent, easy going feel rather than anything overly aggressive or speed focused.

Detailed Review
The fit feels very familiar if you have experience with the Ghost line. It offers a secure heel and midfoot with an accommodating toe box that works well for longer runs. The engineered mesh upper is breathable and comfortable, and I did not experience any hot spots during testing. It strikes a good balance between flexibility and structure for mixed terrain use. The padded tongue adds to the overall comfort, and the rear pull tab makes it easy to slide the shoe on. A 3D printed toe cap provides a bit of added protection against trail debris without feeling overly stiff.

Sizing felt true to my usual men’s 10.5 US. The fit is not overly snug, which makes it more forgiving than some performance oriented shoes. I did not feel the need to adjust sizing, and the overall lockdown remained consistent across different runs. As always, trying them on in person is a good idea if you are between sizes.
Underfoot, the DNA LOFT v3 midsole delivers a moderately soft and smooth ride that leans more toward comfort than responsiveness. It does a great job absorbing impact, especially on longer runs, and feels consistent across different surfaces. This is not a highly energetic or bouncy setup, but it provides a reliable and predictable ride for daily mileage. The platform also offers a nice level of lateral support, helping keep foot movement controlled on uneven terrain.
The outsole is where the trail capability comes into play. Brooks uses a TrailTack rubber outsole with moderate 3 mm lugs that provided solid grip on pavement, gravel, packed dirt, and groomed trails. Traction felt reliable in these conditions, though this is not a shoe designed for highly technical terrain.

On the trail or path, the Ghost Trail feels smooth and easy going. Transitions are natural with a mild forefoot rocker and the shoe encourages a steady pace. It performs best when you settle into a rhythm and focus on logging miles rather than pushing extreme speed. The shoe weight was not noticeable to me while running which is a big plus in my book
I tested the Brooks x Nomadix Ghost Trail on pavement, gravel paths, and light trail sections, and it handled transitions between surfaces very well, even climbing up 20% grades without slippage. Being able to move from road to dirt without thinking about it is a big advantage for mixed terrain routes. Outsole wear was minimal after testing, which speaks to the durability of the TrailTack rubber compound.
Closing Thoughts
The Brooks x Nomadix Ghost Trail is a well executed hybrid that brings road shoe comfort into a trail capable package. The combination of a breathable upper, DNA LOFT v3 cushioning, supportive ride and a durable TrailTack outsole creates a dependable ride across mixed terrain.
Fit is spot on and should work for a wide range of runners, especially those already familiar with the Ghost line. It offers enough structure for light trail use while maintaining the comfort needed for longer runs.
The Nomadix collaboration adds a unique touch to the overall package, giving the shoe a distinct look without taking away from its performance focus.
This is a true do it all option for pavement, gravel, groomed trails, and light off road use. It’s a great choice for runners who value comfort and versatility, especially when mixing pavement and dirt in the same run. If you want one shoe that can handle a variety of conditions without overthinking it, this fits the bill nicely.

During college at Montana Tech, he played football for a few years and worked as a wildland firefighter during the summers.
