Diadora Men’s Nucleo 2 Running Shoes
Review by Will Trail
Initial Impressions
An updated option in Diadora’s running shoe lineup, the Men’s Nucleo 2, is a daily trainer designed for comfort, stability, and durability rather than speed. It blends neutral support with subtle inherent stability, making it especially well suited for longer, steady runs. If you prefer a slightly firmer, controlled ride and don’t mind a short break-in period, this shoe fits that niche well.
The shoe is built on a Duratech 5000® outsole which delivers durable, sure-footed traction across a variety of paved conditions. The outsole’s rubber layout balances grip and flexibility, and the wear-resistant compound inspires confidence for long-term use.

Above the outsole sits a dual-density ANIMA® midsole foam which prioritizes shock absorption and stability over bouncy energy return. Cushioning is most noticeable at landing, particularly in the heel and midfoot, with a smooth but controlled transition forward. The updated asymmetric midsole geometry features a 5 mm drop and a wider heel, midfoot, and forefoot platform than the previous version, contributing to the shoe’s stable feel without using traditional stability elements.
The Nylon Air mesh and microfiber upper create an engineered structure that provides targeted support and respectable breathability. A removable DDATTIVO high-density foam insole adds underfoot comfort and airflow while incorporating antibacterial properties to help manage odor. A traditional lacing system with six eyelets per side distributes pressure evenly and contributes to secure lockdown.

Detailed Review
The fit felt good right out of the box—no pressure points when laced up, and the padded heel held my foot securely with no slippage. The shoe is easy to put on and adjust, and once dialed in, it feels stable and well planted underfoot rather than quick or springy.
My Men’s US 10.5 pair took a few runs to fully break in, which seems consistent with the firmer, more structured midsole design. I normally wear a 10.5–11, and the toe box felt slightly snug compared to other shoes in this category. With my standard-width feet it was manageable, but runners with wider feet should strongly consider the Wide version. Personally, I’d go up a half size next time. As always, trying them on in person is ideal.

I tested the Nucleo 2 on multiple paved runs of varying distances. The Duratech 5000 outsole consistently provided reliable traction, and I never experienced slippage—even on subpar pavement. While light dirt or crushed gravel would likely be fine, this is clearly a road-focused shoe rather than a hybrid or trail option.
The Nylon mesh upper kept my feet comfortable without overheating, even on longer outings. The subtle upper material design was a cool feature to me and offered a way to increase breathability. The 5 mm drop is within my usual preference range, and I didn’t notice any unusual soreness or discomfort during or after runs.

As a runner with heavier footfalls, I found the cushioning especially well suited to my stride. The ANIMA midsole does an excellent job of dampening impact and controlling motion, particularly on landing. While the shoe isn’t especially lively or fast, it feels dependable and consistent. The combination of midsole geometry, DDATTIVO insole, and a subtle forefoot rocker provides a mild forward assist rather than an aggressive bounce. After several runs, the midsole softened slightly and felt more forgiving, especially on longer efforts.
At 275 grams (size 9), the weight feels appropriate for a durable daily trainer. It never felt heavy, but it also doesn’t disappear on foot the way lighter, speed-focused shoes do.
Closing Thoughts
After several runs in the Diadora Men’s Nucleo 2, I’ve been impressed by the shoe’s well-balanced construction and overall reliability. The Nylon Air mesh upper provides secure lockdown and comfort without excess bulk, and the DDATTIVO insole adds a nice layer of step-in cushioning and breathability that holds up well over longer efforts. Together, they create a comfortable and supportive on-foot experience from the first mile to the last.
Underfoot, the ANIMA midsole delivers consistent impact protection and subtle stability, particularly for runners with heavier footfalls. While it doesn’t offer a highly energetic or race-like feel, it excels at absorbing shock and maintaining control at easy to moderate paces. The wider platform and asymmetric geometry help keep the ride smooth and predictable, especially as mileage adds up. After a short break-in period, the midsole softens slightly and becomes even more forgiving.
The Duratech 5000 outsole rounds out the package with dependable grip and long-term durability on pavement, reinforcing the Nucleo 2’s role as a true daily trainer. Fit runs slightly small, so I recommend sizing up by half a size or trying them on in person.
Overall, the Diadora Men’s Nucleo 2 shoes favor comfort and longevity over outright speed and are best suited for runners seeking a stable, neutral daily trainer for consistent road miles. Diadora has put together a thoughtfully designed shoe that performs best when the focus is on steady running, durability, and confidence underfoot.
