Ibex Men’s Woolies Pro Tech Bottoms
Review by Will Trail
Initial Impressions
The Ibex Men’s Woolies Pro Tech Bottoms are a premium evolution of the classic merino base-layer bottom, built specifically for active use in cool to cold conditions. Designed to be worn next to skin, they combine Ibex’s long-standing merino expertise with modern textile innovation. The result is a lightweight, technical base layer that feels soft and natural but performs at a much higher level than traditional merino. From the first try-on, these bottoms feel purpose-built for movement, layering cleanly under outer layers while remaining comfortable enough for long days on trail or around camp.

Design, Comfort & Fit
From the first wear, the Ibex Men’s Woolies Pro Tech Bottoms stand out for their exceptional next-to-skin comfort. The Nuyarn® merino fabric feels noticeably softer and more elastic than traditional merino, with none of the scratchiness sometimes associated with wool. The lightweight 125 g/m² fabric keeps bulk to a minimum, making these bottoms ideal for layering under soft shell, hard shell pants or even jeans without restriction.
Stretch is a major highlight. The fabric moves easily with the body, whether hiking, biking, or bending and stretching around camp. The waistband sits comfortably without digging in, and the flatlock seams stay unobtrusive even during long, active days. The fit is relaxed and non-compressive, staying in place without sagging or bunching.
Length runs consistent for most body types, but may feel a bit short for those with longer inseams. I have a 33” inseam, and these fit me perfectly as did the XL waist size. The functional fly is a practical detail for daily use, though these are designed as a base layer rather than a standalone bottom for casual wear.

Performance
The bottoms resist odor exceptionally well, staying fresh after multiple days of wear which is ideal for multi-day hikes, travel, or bikepacking trips. Ibex claims this merino construction is 35% more thermally efficient, 85% more elastic, and 8.8× more durable than traditional merino, and my experience gives no reason to doubt those claims.
Moisture management is equally impressive. I wore these in 25–50°F outdoor conditions, and they wicked sweat efficiently under an outer layer, keeping me dry and comfortable. While they are not designed to serve as a heavy insulation layer for extended periods in extreme cold, they excel as part of a smart layering system where movement and versatility are key. On several colder days, I layered them under jeans to the office and found they maintained a perfectly comfortable temperature. I also shoveled snow with them under jeans and stayed warm without getting sweaty or chilled.
The standard fit hits a sweet spot between athletic and casual. They layer smoothly under shells and jeans, with no bunching or abnormal ride-up noted. Subtle branding adds to the overall simplicity and clean aesthetic.

Care and Maintenance
Caring for merino wool requires a little extra attention, but it’s worth it. Wash cold, skip fabric softeners, and line dry as this routine keeps the fibers soft and the bottoms’ shape consistent. While odor resistance allows for less frequent washing, stains from oils or dirt should be treated promptly to maintain appearance. After repeated wash cycles and extended use, the fabric shows minimal pilling and retains its fit and stretch, highlighting the durability benefits of the Nuyarn® construction.
Verdict
The Ibex Men’s Woolies Pro Tech Bottoms are a top-tier lightweight merino base layer for active use in cool to cold conditions. They deliver outstanding comfort, impressive stretch, reliable moisture management, and excellent odor resistance—all in a fabric that feels natural and soft against the skin.
While the premium price reflects their high-end construction, the performance and durability justify the investment for anyone who spends serious time outdoors in colder seasons. Whether layered for winter hiking, skiing, or worn around camp, these bottoms consistently perform without fuss.
If you’re looking for a lightweight merino base-layer bottom that blends modern textile technology with classic wool comfort, the Ibex Men’s Woolies Pro Tech Bottoms offer refined performance and long-lasting quality that’s hard to beat.
