Specialized S-Works Evade 4 Helmet

The Specialized S-Works Evade 4 Helmet is the first Specialized helmet to feature the new BOA® FS2 Fit System. Could be a do-it-all quiver-killer helmet for those who race bicycles?

Fit and Feel
I am typically a size small in most helmets and I found that the Specialized S-Works Evade 4 Helmet fits true to size. The straps are also comfortable, providing a safe and secure helmet fastening system that feels good around the ears, neck, and chin.

BOA® FS2 Fit System
The BOA® FS2 Fit System is the true star of the show. The full name – BOA® Fit System featuring FS2 — Dynamic360 – is a micro-adjustable and multi-directional helmet system that truly delivers comfort. The FS2 dial platform is micro-adjustable, with 40% finer adjustment resolution and sub-millimeter accuracy.

The FS2 yoke is engineered to lock in the occipital bone and cradle the sides of the head, delivering a Dynamic360TM wrap for a secure, personalized fit. Featuring ladder adjustment with 11 vertical positions spaced 4mm apart, the FS2 yoke delivers dialed in precision at just 19g system weight for lightweight performance.
The FS2 Forehead guide is unique to this BOA Fit System. Instead of forming a straight line to house the lace system, this forehead guide resembles tight horseshoe bends that distribute pressure better, offering improved fit and comfort.

Finally, the lace system has been improved. The TX1.2 lace is a low-friction, textile lace solution engineered with a soft yet durable contact surface that conforms to the head —maintaining a secure, precise fit in the toughest conditions, from extreme cold to heat. Its zero-stretch construction and long-term durability help sustain consistent protection performance and preserve helmet fit over time. The TX1.2 lace has a 6% stronger hold compared to other fit systems.
The new FS2 dial platform also incorporates 36% recycled content, reflecting BOA’s commitment to more responsible design without compromising performance.

Ride Performance
I’ve been wearing the Specialized S-Works Evade 4 Helmet on road, gravel, and time-trial (TT) style rides up to 3 hours in duration in temperatures sometimes reaching the mid-90s for the past 6 weeks. As part of my testing, I’ve been swapping out helmets to other highly vented aero helmets, to compare how the ventilation of the Specialized S-Works Evade 4 Helmet feels versus other helmets on the market.

I don’t have a way to scientifically quantify my testing, but I do think that the Specialized S-Works Evade 4 Helmet is the most ventilated helmet in my collection. I could feel the air flowing across my head nicely, adding evaporative cooling and, sometimes, a mental boost from knowing that my helmet wasn’t cooking my head.
As sometimes happens on long, hot rides, I sometimes develop uncomfortable pressure points from helmet retention systems. Even after 3 hours of hot TT style riding, the Specialized S-Works Evade 4 Helmet felt as comfortable as it did when I first put it on.

Also, of note, the Mips® feels smooth on the inside of the helmet and didn’t once snag or pull on my hair.
My one complaint about the Specialized S-Works Evade 4 Helmet is specific to TT riding, where a majority of the ride time was spent on my aero bars. The front of the helmet dips downward, presumably for aerodynamics. The result is that the helmet blocks my view of the horizon. I can see the road directly in front of me (i.e. I’m perfectly safe), but I’m unable to look at the horizon unless I crane my head upwards significantly. This could be a problem specific to my bike fit, neck flexibility, and riding position. It didn’t affect my ride performance or overall safety, but it did make me a little uneasy. I imagine riding in aero with this helmet would take some time to adjust to the reduced field of vision. This issue was only apparent when I was riding aero on my TT bike or in the drops on my road bike. I had full field of vision when I was riding upright on top of my handlebars.
Closing Thoughts
During my testing of the Specialized S-Works Evade 4 Helmet, I often wished that I had this helmet for Ironman Coeur d’Alene in 2021. There was a historic heat dome affecting race day temperatures. The daytime high was 101 and the entirety of the bike portion of the race felt like I was riding inside a hot blow dryer. It was unpleasant. As I was packing for this race, I had to make a choice: an unvented TT-style aero helmet or a basic non-aero but highly vented road helmet. Based on previous hot races, I know that temperatures over 85 degrees are too hot for my TT-style aero helmet and my performance suffers. So I left the faster helmet at home in favor of more ventilation and a less cooked noggin.
Aside from the obvious “ride fast in hot conditions” for road, gravel, and mountain style cycling, where a more traditional helmet is needed, the Specialized S-Works Evade 4 Helmet is a fantastic aero helmet option for hot triathlon races. Ironman World Championships in Kona is a prime example of where this helmet would be an asset. I know many high performing amateur athletes who have had to pick their derpy road helmet over their TT aero helmet because of heat considerations. The Specialized S-Works Evade 4 Helmet eliminates that decision point, offering aerodynamic gains with heat dissipating ventilation.
Verdict
The Specialized S-Works Evade 4 Helmet is a quiver killer helmet, appropriate for any style of racing, no matter the temperature.
