Overview: Maybe it’s Sperry’s long history of making casual boat shoes and sandals, but I had never really thought of Sperry when looking for technical athlete shoes. It turns out I have been missing out. The Sperry Cutwater Deck Boots are designed to keep your feet dry and comfortable for hours on the water.

I live within walking distance of the Chesapeake Bay and am lucky enough to paddle around 50 days a year. Over the past few years, I have tried a number of different sandals, water shoes, and boots for both paddling and launching boats. All work great in certain conditions but few can be your go-to all year long.

This is where the Cutwater Deck Boots come in. After testing them this spring I believe I now have my go-to shoe for launching boats. Our main launch area is an old rotten concrete ramp that is usually covered with ice-like algae.

Many of my paddle partners have fallen victim to the barefoot butt slide down the ramp. As fun as that is to watch, it’s hazardous and can quickly put a damper on your paddle trip. The Cutwater boots excelled in this terrain. The non-slip rubber and comfy footbed made launch-loaded canoes and SUPS a breeze.

Key Features:

High Walls – The durable rubber sides keep your feet dry in a few inches of water. This makes them great for launching kayaks or days out fishing on the boat.  I also like wearing them on a rainy day walks with the dogs. I really like this feature in cold water conditions.

Breathable – The big problem with muck boots is the lack of breathability. The Cutwater mitigates that with highly breathable neoprene around the ankle.

Unmatched Grip – The Sperry Wave-Siping technology creates an amazing grip on wet and slippery surfaces. This includes smooth surfaces like SUP, Canoe, or boat decks, and on rough surfaces like wet rocks or cement docks.

Style – Despite their technical function the Cutwater held on to the classic style that Sperry is known for. I have worn them both around town and into some local dock bars and they look great!

While he lives pretty far from the mountains, he puts a heavy focus on preparing for them and inspiring others to do the same. He first fell in love with the mountains on family trips to the White Mountains and the Adirondacks. He spent the majority of his early life competitively running and leisurely paddling, however after college he began focusing on learning to climb, snowboard, and backpack.

Over the past ten years since then, he has been fortunate enough to gain some amazing experiences exploring North America. Some of the most memorable thus far are alpine climbing in the Sierra, trail running in Alberta, learning to splitboard in NH, countless days hiking in the Catskills, or a plethora of mellow days paddling the Chesapeake Bay with friends.
