The Kuhl Wyldfire hoody is a versatile jacket. Made from a waxed cotton material for a stylish look, while having great 800 fill RDS certified down as an insulation. This jacket is part high performance puffy, part refined aesthetic.
Kuhl Wyldfire Hoody Review
There are many down jackets and hoody in the Kuhl line up, from lightweight puffies to burly work ware. The Wyldfire is a mix of both categories. Featuring 800 fill RDS certified down to keep you warm. RDS is a standard for tracking down to make sure the animals have not been subjected to unnecessary harm. So you can feel better about the source of the down.
The outer material is a mix of cotton and nylon that is coated in a wax treatment. This acts as a natural DWR and water resistance. There is no WPB membrane in this jacket. Instead, Kuhl relies on the tried and true waxing treatment to keep moisture out of the jacket.
This treatment is sustainable and you can reapply as needed. It also gives the jacket extra character as the material becomes uniquely stylish over time and use. As a benefit of the cotton mix, the jacket seems to be more durable than a traditional lightweight puffy.
The hand pockets are placed lower to be useful in day-to-day use. They also have a light fleece lining to keep your hands warm. The two Napoleon-style pockets feature watertight zippers and can accommodate a cell phone. On the left arm is a very small zippered pocket that is great for chapstick. The inside has one family small pocket on the left side.
I really like the hood on the Wyldfire. It has a semi-stiff brim, adjustable on the back of the hood as well as on the front. The coverage is fantastic! It is a very functional hood.
This is where the Wyldfire really stands out. The jacket is very stylish. I appreciate how good it looks, yet can perform as well as any other puffy in the category. It is nice to have a legit puffy that can handle outdoor use in the mountains, yet looks classy enough for a date night. No more “just off the mountain” look.
I am 6’1″ 205lb 45″ chest 33″ waist and 36/37 arms. The XL is a fantastic fit for me. I appreciate the Kuhl makes their clothes for active men and women. The fit is great if you have bigger shoulders or chest. It is more of an athletic fit, with no extra material hanging off your body.
The Kuhl Wyldfire $349 is a really great jacket for several kinds of use. It will work well as insulation in cold conditions, look good in urban situations, and travels well too. Available in 3 colors, hooded, non-hooded, men’s, and womens.
