Mountain Hardwear Phantom Hoody – Waterproofed Down With Pertex Diamond Fuse
The new Mountain Hardwear Phantom Hoody features RDS 800 fill waterproofed down and Pertex Diamond Fuse fabric for durability. What that means for you, is a lightweight down jacket that can take some beating!
RDS – Responsibly Down Standard
RDS is becoming more and more popular and I am thrilled about that. To learn more about RDS head here. Basically, it means that the animals used to attain the down were not harmed. You can feel good about that!

Mountain Hardwear uses 800 fill power of this RDS down in the Phantom. That means you get great warmth to weight ratio in this jacket.

Mountain Hardwear Phantom Hoody 800 Fill RDS down has a lot of loft!
Waterproof treated down
MH takes that 800 fill power RDS down and treats it with a DWR coating to repel water. This is a great feature that I think all down products should be doing. Treating the down to make it water-resistant is great peace of mind. I used the jacket in all kinds of snowstorms and the down clusters did not wet out.
This also means that it is easy to clean. Down can be tricky to dry. Often it takes a few attempts and you still have to pry clumps of down apart. I have found that down treated with a DWR dries much easier than untreated down.

Pertex Diamond Fuse
Pertex Diamond Fuse – New and Strong!
The 20D material Mountain Hardwear uses on the Phantom is really impressive. It is strong as heck, while still being lightweight. Pertex designed the new Diamond Fuse to be durable and easy to care for. Not only is it durable and light, but it is also almost translucent!
How the Phantom Hoody was tested
I received the Phantom in February and put it to use from day 1. Headed straight to the mountains in a snowstorm. I set up camp with our two dogs and remained outside in the snowstorm for the next several hours. Interesting story actually. We came across a woman who lost a puppy in the snowstorm. So, the dogs and I went on a hunt to rescue the little retriever. The puppy was fine, our dogs were happy, and the Phantom jacket was dry. Impressive.

The next three months saw almost daily use as my main insulation jacket. Several winter camping trips. Splitboarding missions. Lots of early morning dog walks. Lots of daily use. I washed the jacket three times (I hope you wash your gear too!) and had no issues with materials fraying or down clumping.

The Mountain Hardwear Phantom Jacket is the real deal. It is lightweight (11 ounces for XL), durable, packs into a hand pocket and fits great. The XL fit my body very well. For reference, I am 6’1″ 205lb, 45″ chest, and 33″ waist. The sleeves are nice and long too. I can not think of anything bad to say about this jacket! MSRP $350.
