Smith Squad XL MTB Goggles

Review by Will Trail

Initial Impressions

Mountain bike goggles have historically been borrowed from the snow or moto world—rarely designed for the actual demands of mountain biking, where sweat, pedaling, and constantly changing light conditions create unique challenges. Smith Optics set out to change that with the Squad XL MTB, a goggle built specifically for riders who need ventilation, fog control, optical clarity, and seamless helmet integration.

Detailed Review

The Squad XL MTB’s most impressive feature is the ChromaPop™ anti-fog lens, which boosts contrast and natural color to make trail features stand out—even as light conditions change rapidly. The cylindrical Carbonic-x lens provides clarity with impact resistance, maintaining crisp optics without distortion.  I currently have Smith ChromaPop™ MTB glasses and have been very pleased with the clarity they provide.

My test set came with both a ChromaPop™ Contrast Rose Flash lens and a clear anti-fog lens, but I chose to exclusively use the ChromaPop™ lens to see how it performed in varying light. I rode bike park laps featuring dense tree canopy, open sun-exposed portions, and fast transitions between both. I was especially impressed by how the mid-level tint balanced bright light without compromising visibility in shaded sections. I never once noticed visual degradation or strain, which was exactly the outcome I hoped for.

Both lenses also offer 100% UVA and UVB protection, and thanks to internal anti-fog treatments and Smith’s open ventilation path design, I experienced minimal fogging only during rest stops. If any moisture ever built up, a few seconds of riding cleared it completely.

A major contributor to the fog-free experience is Smith’s open lattice frame, which replaces dense foam with an open, ventilated structure around the entire frame. Top and bottom vents ensure constant airflow, even when wearing a full-face helmet like the Smith Hardline, which I also tested.

The result? Unmatched airflow and breathability, with only one minor tradeoff: in very dusty conditions some dust made its way inside the goggle. It wasn’t excessive, and a quick wipe resolved it, but it’s worth noting if you often ride in dry settings.

As for fit, the Squad XL MTB is ideal for medium to large faces. The flexible lattice frame provides a comfortable, adaptive fit without pressure points, and while the nose bridge felt slightly snug at first, it never caused discomfort over time.

Integration with helmets is often an afterthought in goggle design—but not here. The Squad XL MTB goggles were clearly engineered with Smith helmets in mind. When paired with the Smith Hardline I also was testing, the goggles fit cleanly under the brow, with no gaps, interference, or movement. The ultra-wide, silicone-backed strap stays put on everything from slow tech climbs to high-speed descents.

The goggle frame foam deserves a shoutout too. As someone who sweats a lot, sweat management is key. The Squad XL’s three-layer foam was both soft against the skin and highly effective at keeping sweat out of my eyes. After a few months of hard riding, the foam still looks and feels like new.

Closing Thoughts

The Smith Squad XL MTB goggles are purpose-built for real-world mountain biking. They deliver fog-free performance, enhanced vision, secure helmet integration, and lasting comfort.

If you’re someone who pushes on the trail hard, values sharp optics in variable light, and wears a full-face helmet, these goggles are a top-tier choice.

Pros

  • ChromaPop™ lens enhances trail definition and color clarity
  • Open lattice frame dramatically improves airflow and breathability
  • Excellent integration with Smith Hardline helmet
  • Durable, moisture-managing face foam
  • Bonus clear lens and microfiber bag included

Cons

  • Some dust ingress in especially dry, loose trail conditions
  • Nose fit may feel snug for certain face shapes

Bottom Line

If you’re sweating up climbs and sending loose descents, the Smith Squad XL MTB goggles strike the ideal balance between clarity, comfort, airflow, and durability. This is what true MTB-specific goggle design looks like.
