Teva ApreTrail Flip-Flop

Review by Erin Trail

I love a comfy flip flop but have historically struggled to find one that can handle more rugged conditions around campsites (goatheads) or ones that don’t turn into a slip-n-slide when your feet are wet.

New this season for Teva is the ApreTrail Flip-Flop, and true to Teva, this flip flop is ready for any of your more chill adventures.

The Teva ApreTrail Flip-Flop is intended to be used when you’re done hiking, but as an endurance athlete, I really enjoyed wearing them when I was hanging out, running errands, coaching swimming…. My other recovery flip flops are super squishy but don’t hold up well outside at camp.  And when those other shoes got wet they were flat out dangerous, making them a really bad choice for paddleboarding or after swimming in a lake.

Teva ApreTrail Flip-Flop is designed for more relaxed adventuring.  The soles features a textured rubber that are plenty grippy and won’t pick up a collection of spiky weeds as you bushwack across the campground. The ULTRA-COMF® foam footbed is supportive underfoot while offering a light cushion. The footbed is also textured for airflow and it doesn’t slip when your feet are wet.

The shoes are unisex and only come in whole sizes; I wear a half size in sandals and ordered down a size and found that they fit well lengthwise but were a bit wide for my narrow feet.

There are thoughtful features to the Teva ApreTrail Flip-Flop, such as including holes in the shoe’s straps to make it easier to affix the shoes to a pack, as well as making the shoes buoyant so they float should they fall off your paddleboard.

The shoes are a bit on the wide and bulky side; you won’t win a fashion contest in these.  But given the durability, functionality, and comfort, who cares about being fashionable?  Priced at $50, they are cost competitive with other brands of recovery flip flops, but offer a lot more in terms of functionality and durability.

Cycling encouraged her to see landscapes in a new way, learn new skills and to develop self reliance; now she often goes and does Type 2 rides just to see if she can do it.  She’s got all the bikes: gravel, mountain, fat bike, time trial and road.

She is even known to combine her love of camping and cycling and go off on solo 24 hour overnight bikepacking trips in the mountains of Colorado. In addition to bikes, she teaches yoga, lifts weights, skis, SUPs and has recently purchased a campervan.

Erin is a former Montana park ranger with a degree in environmental engineering.  She loves getting into technical details while putting her gear (and herself) through the paces. She shares her home in Colorado with her husband, Will, and her 3 cats (Zipper, Brewtus, and Simcoe).

2025 brings some exciting things.  Erin has qualified to be on Team USA for USA Triathlon and will be competing in a World Championship off-road triathlon in Pontevedra, Spain in June. To prepare for this event, she’s got several mountain bike races and training weekends planned in the months leading up to the big day.  Additionally, she’s racing Ironman Boise 70.3 in July.  Once her race schedule closes out in July, she’ll be moving to more adventure based activities (bikepacking, vanlife, and mountain bike festivals).

When not adventuring, she can be found on a sunny patio somewhere, drinking beers with her husband.
