Back in February, I was lucky enough to meet with Victorinox at the Outdoor Media Alliance and was able to see + hold their line of multitools.  As a woman, I have smaller hands. I was looking for a multitool to take with me on bikepacking trips.  My requirements were pretty basic: have a good variety of basic tools (scissors, can opener, screw driver heads, a few knife/saw options) and I wanted something light and compact.

I chose the Victorinox Swiss Tool Spirit X for testing because it felt good in my hands.  It has a curved shape, which works well for smaller hands.  And it has plenty (more than plenty) of tool options for my backcountry adventures.

Out of the box, it’s immediately apparent that this is a well made tool.  The finishes on the Victorinox Swiss Tool Spirit X are really nice and the tool feels good in your hand. The hinges for the tools are sturdy – you won’t accidentally open up anything up.  The motion to open the pilers and access tools is smooth with the right amount of resistance.  I also appreciate that the tools lock into place when fully extended.  It’s impossible to fold a knife blade back into the tool or accidentally fold it onto a finger.  The unlocking mechanism is a small tab that you pull downwards (towards the pliars end of the tool); one small movement and the tool hinges back into it’s storage spot inside the tool handle.

The Victorinox Swiss Tool Spirit X is compact and light, making it easy to pack into pockets, bags, or luggage.  I travel for races (triathlon or running events), and often find that I need scissors and an assortment of tools at my destination. The Victorinox Swiss Tool Spirit X has plenty of options that covers all of my tool needs for my race travels.  Just be sure to pack the tool in your checked bag because TSA will definitely confiscate it if it’s in your carry-on bag.

I haven’t yet been able to bikepack, but I am looking forward to bringing the Victorinox Swiss Tool Spirit X along with me.  It will easily fit into the side pocket of my frame bag.  Backcountry bikepacking means that I need to be prepared for an assortment of situations, ranging from bike mechanicals to dealing with nature. The Victorinox Swiss Tool Spirit X, with its diverse range of tools, makes me feel more comfortable and confident, knowing I’ll have something in my kit that will help me in fixing any issues that I encounter.
