Patagonia Hi-Loft Down Hoody – Recycled Down and Shell Puffy

Patagonia Hi-Loft Down Hoody

Patagonia Hi-Loft Down Hoody Overview

The Patagonia Hi-Loft Down Hoody is not a typical down jacket.  It is made from 100% recycled polyester AND recycled down.  It packs into its own pocket and provides good warmth to weight ratio.  The fit is standard Patagonia (kind of boxy) and the torso length is good.  Features are minimal and functional.  I used this jacket for the last month during the coldest part of the year in Colorado. Recycled Down ?!?

Yep, recycled down.  At first, I did not know that was even possible.  After looking into it, I was impressed to learn that the practice of recycling down has been in place for a while.  Basically, they take down from duvets, jackets and sleeping bags and clean the down up and reuse it.  Patagonia took some time to find recycled down that met their own high quality of standards (read more about it here).  Once they did, they embraced the technology and feature several recycled down items now.  See the entire Recycled Down Collection here.  There are over 50 items offering recycled down!

Packable Recycled Down

The down ranges from 600-700 fill power and functions just as regular down would.  The internal zipper pocket acts as a stuff sack for the jacket.  Unlike some stuff sack pockets, I was easily able to stuff the Hi-Loft Down Hoody into the pocket.

Recycled Polyester shell

Patagonia is really good about offering recycled clothing.  After the last Outdoor Retailer show, we were excited about the lineup.  We have tested the recycled Gore-Tex Pro Shell PowSlayer bibs and recycled Gore-Tex Powder Bowl jackets and loved them.  The 30D polyester ripstop fabric is durable and treated with a DWR.  As you can see from the photos, the Hi-Loft hoody saw plenty of snow.  The DWR held off the moisture during testing.  Though, by no means is it waterproof.

Fit and Function

I tested the Hi-Loft Down hoody in XL.  I found it to be a little big in the stomach, but perfect in arm’s length and shoulders.  For reference, I am 6’1″ 205 with 45″ chest and 33″ waist.  I appreciated the roomier fit to slide over jackets while setting up gear before splitboard tours.  I used the jacket for some winter camping as well.  Having the pockets lower was good for casual use.  If you are wanting this jacket for casual use, you may want to size down.

Review of Patagonia Hi-Loft Down Hoody

I love the fact that the jacket is made of recycled materials.  That alone puts it at the top of my list.  The jacket offers good loft for less than 800 fill down.  It packs up small enough fit in a backpack.  The fit is good for layering over other jackets during non-activities (or post-tour beer).  Available in Mens and Womens, Boys, Girls and Baby!
