The Triple FAT Goose Hyland jacket is actually 3 jackets in 1.

First, there is the 20k waterproof outer shell.  This falls into the “hardshell” category given its waterproof breathable rating, but the feel of the material is much more softshell. Not a sporty softshell, more of a stylish cloth jacket. I would never guess that the material is actually a legit hardshell rating.

This is good city use where you don’t want to draw attention to a technical piece of gear.  You just want the performance of one 🙂 Bonus – they use an eco-friendly DWR treatment that is fluoride-free.

Second, there is a legit puffy jacket.  I mean legit!  With 8 ounces of 750+ down this down puffy is seriously warm!  Most puffy jackets have 3-4 ounces (80-112 grams) of insulation.  Nothing wrong with that, and that amount of down can work in cool temps.

But if you are dealing with temps well into the cold and cold AF range, you will need more insulation.  8 ounces of high quality down can handle that.  That is more than twice the down of most puffers out there.  Do the math, that is 224 grams of down! I have one other jacket with this much down and it has been my winter camping puffy for 12 years (and it is still going strong!)

Finally, you put them together and you have a good looking parka that will keep you warm and dry in cold and wet conditions.  Plus, it looks great! My wife was very happy when this jacket came in for review!

How I tested the Triple FAT Goose Hyland Jacket – 3 in 1 Waterproof Down Parka

I used this jacket day-to-day here in Denver.  We had a few snowstorms and temps were in the single digits.  I simply grabbed this parka and put it on over a t-shirt and went about my day.  Watching others put on layers and layers of jackets and beanies and look miserable. It made going to the store or gym easy.

How I really pushed the jacket was winter camping and hiking.  I took the Hyland to my favorite spot and properly got my 4Runner stuck on a mountain pass.  I was able to back down the pass, in the dark, in a snowstorm.  Down on the level ground, I set up our camp and enjoyed the weather.  It snowed for 14 hours straight and temps got down to 8 degrees.

All I used the whole time was this jacket, a t-shirt, and new MH Exposure gloves. That did the trick!  I shot this video after camping and the sun came up.  You can see how warm and happy I am in the vid!

Who this is for

I can see this being a great winter jacket for people who want an understated parka that can handle Arctic temps and snow.  Some people like to wear technical clothing everywhere (city and mountains) some don’t.  If you are seeking high performance without wanting a brightly colored alpine kit, then this is for you.
