BlackStrap Men’s Approach Camp Button Down Shirt
Review by Will Trail
Initial Impressions
The BlackStrap Men’s Approach Camp Button Down Shirt is a lightweight short sleeve camp shirt built for warm weather outdoor use and everyday wear. It leans into a simple, functional design with good breathability and sun protection, while still looking like something you’d actually want to wear after leaving the trail.

Specs
- Fabric: 100% recycled polyester woven ripstop (95 g/m2)
- Fit: Regular to Relaxed
- Features: Button chest pocket, upper chest venting, sunglass loop, button front closure
Design, Comfort & Fit
From the first time I buttoned it up, the Approach Shirt felt light and smooth against the skin with a slightly structured build that helps it hold its shape well. The Scribble Lark colorway adds a unique patterned look that stands out without being loud. I don’t normally gravitate toward patterns, but this one has grown on me. The relaxed fit offers plenty of room through the shoulders and torso without feeling sloppy, and the cut allows full, unrestricted movement. I tested a size XL, with sleeve length landing around mid-bicep and torso length extending a few inches past the belt line for solid coverage without feeling excessive. The collar has a mild structure that helps it stay in place, while upper chest yoke vents improve airflow during higher output use.

A button chest pocket handles small lightweight essentials, and the integrated sunglass loop adds simple, useful storage. A lens wipe located on the lower hem adds practical convenience.
Performance
The BlackStrap Men’s Approach Camp Button Down Shirt performed well for hiking and casual wear during warm early-summer conditions. Breathability is solid, and the chest vents help dump heat during higher output moments.
Even without fabric stretch, mobility was never an issue. Reaching, hiking, and general movement felt natural with no restriction. It also provides good sun coverage for a short sleeve shirt and offers mild wind resistance when conditions shift.
During my testing, I found the chest pocket is best suited for lightweight essentials and isn’t ideal for heavier objects like keys. Overall, the shirt stayed comfortable and dependable across a variety of low to moderate output activities. The sunglass loop ended up being one of those small features I appreciated more than expected. It gave me a consistent place to stash my glasses during breaks and helped prevent the usual routine of setting them on a rock or tailgate and wondering where they went later.

Care and Maintenance
Care is simple: machine wash cold and tumble dry low or hang dry. After repeated use, the shirt has held its shape and appearance well, with no noticeable fraying or signs of fabric wear.
Closing Thoughts
The BlackStrap Men’s Approach Camp Button Down Shirt is a clean, easy-going short sleeve option that blends casual style with functional outdoor performance. The relaxed fit, vented chest design, and lightweight ripstop fabric make it a comfortable choice for hiking, everyday wear, and a backyard BBQ, while details like the sunglass loop and chest pocket add practical utility without overcomplicating the design. It delivers a straightforward, reliable feel that works well across a range of activities and earned a solid spot as a go-to warm weather shirt in my rotation.
