Devan Dowd
As it’s time to ring in 2024, it may be time to trade in those hiking trails for snowboard boots & mountain slopes. It also may mean that you may need to become a bit more strategic in layering to keep vibes high as temps plummet. For all my lady Engearment fans out there, if you’re in the market for a new base layer set that is responsibly sourced, look no further than the matching Krimson Klover Ava Top & Ava Leggings set.
Krimson Klover Ava Top and Leggings review

For those of you who may not know, Krimson Klover is a Women’s clothing brand, centered around the mission to bring performance, comfort and style to your everyday adventures through the creation of playful, mountain-inspired apparel that is made from low impact fabrics, responsible sourcing, and a driving commitment to elevate women. Krimson Klover believes that by designing clothing that lives at the intersection of fashion and function, all women can be empowered to pursue their passions while building more adventure-enhancers, confidence-boosters and smile-makers in our women’s outdoor adventure community!
The Krimson Klover Ava Top & Leggings are the staple base layers of their winter collection. Engineered with 4-way stretch & minimal seams for all-day comfort that moves with your body for every ski, snowboard, snowshoe, or tubing run, Krimson Klover has female performance in mind. Although this set runs on the snugger side, the compression fit is intentionally designed to support your muscles during activity, while preventing lactic acid buildup. This will keep you outside longer, allowing you to summit more mountains, speed down fresh terrains and be fully present in your winter wonderland of choice.
With snowboard season ramping up in the Rocky Mountains, we’ve already had some single digit days. As I am testing out new outer layers, I have been grateful for a reliable base layer set that keeps me cozy & toasty, without the unnecessary bulkiness that sometimes comes at the expense of staying warm. As a 5’3”, 138 lb female, I am wearing a Women’s S/M in both the Ava top & leggings, in black color. Made from recycled polyester, both layers incorporate moisture wicking & odor control, so no matter how much you work up a sweat out there, you can rest assured you will not be stinky as you make your post-mountain-high ride home!

So, what did I love the most while testing these two pieces out?
Women’s Ava Top & Ava Leggings:
-
- Breathable, Stretch Comfort – As someone who is very particular & does not like their base layers too tight to the point of making me claustrophobic, I appreciate the thoughtful design of the Krimson Klover Ava top. A great balance of staying snug & not bunching when paired with a mid & outer layer, but not too tight where it felt hard to breathe. The thumbholes in sleeves were another great surprise as this allowed me to throw my gloves over the shirt cuffs to prevent snow from getting in for those few wipeouts I may or may not have taken on the first snowboard day of 2024!
- Minimal Seams, Maximum Comfort – Designed with minimal seams, it was a great surprise to take both the Ava Top & Leggings off after a day on the slopes and not be covered in the normal legging lines I normally find myself dealing with. Although this may be a minor callout, I appreciate this as it helps my skin get less irritated, which happens with other base layers.
- Odor Control to Help You Smell Sweet While Shredding Up The Gnar – Thanks to the recycled polyester blend, made up of polyamide, polyester and elastane, Krimson Klover successfully keeps you smelling fresh even after a day of pushing yourself to your limits. This is a nice touch, as it allows you to pack lighter by reusing the same base layers over multiple days of the mountains, while also helping boost your confidence that you don’t need to pack an extra pair of leggings for the drive home (because who likes being the smelly one in the car?)
Although the Ava Set does its job of keeping you nice & warm on the slopes, I personally was not a huge fan of the waistband on the leggings. With a high-waisted ruching in the front, it was not the most flattering on my body type & put pressure on parts of my body that do not love to be squeezed too tight. I will say, they served their purpose as a solid layer underneath your ski bibs or pants, but because of the waistband & floral print on the side, I personally would not wear these as solo leggings (*Note: This was a minor nuance mainly driven by my own personal preference, and should not be an issue for most women).
Finally, as a precaution, make sure to read the Care Instructions carefully, as Krimson Klover guides you to predominantly rely on handwashing in order to extend the life of your garment. If you are someone who is always on the go & does not normally follow the care instructions to the tee, I would just be mindful that these may need some extra TLC when cleaning.
Overall, Krimson Klover’s Ava Top & Leggings base layers know how to keep women warm & toasty during your winter adventures, and will be living in my snowboard bag for chilly days on the slopes. Wishing you happy trails, snowy days, and many memories to come in 2024!
Devan Dowd
Growing up in Massachusetts, Devan has been an athlete all her life. Starting at the age of 4 as a competitive gymnast, she learned quickly the joy that comes from hard work, determination, and a jammed packed schedule. Eventually, gymnastics led to competitive lacrosse, which resulted in her growing some wings and heading to the PNW to pursue a DI College Lacrosse opportunity at the University of Oregon.

On the single off-day each week, she quickly learned to see Mother Earth as her playground and wanted to use every second of free time to find chase AOTDs (Adventures of the Days). These AOTDs were the inspiration for her blog Dabbling in Traveling & youtube channel.

From waterfalls, to snow covered mountains, to sand dune hikes – one thing was certain, something always went awry on these AOTDs. But hey, memories were always made! Not only was UO an incredible college experience, Oregon sparked her love for the outdoors & traveling across the country for games helped introduce her to Colorado in 2014. Staring up at the Flatirons on CU Boulder’s campus, she knew one day she would call Colorado home!

After returning to the east coast upon graduation, Devan’s heart never stopped longing to live in Colorado one day. But luckily the pandemic brought a newfound acceptance for remote work and in Nov. 2021 her dream came true!

By day, Devan is a Product Manager at Capital One. By afternoon, she is a personal trainer, coaching group Crossfit classes at Axistence Athletics (the best Adventure gym you will ever find!). By evening, she pours her heart into nonprofit work, specifically focused on driving sustainable change in Haiti through the Brace for Impact 46 organization (Fun fact – she has been traveling to Haiti since 2015, accumulating 7 trips and 7 months of living down there!).

Brace for Impact works in Northern Haiti to provide sustainable, multifaceted approaches to support child development, education, medical care, job development, and implementation of clean water & sanitation across the community, which touches 40,000 people each day! (Want to learn more? Check out their website www.braceforimpact46.com )

As her friends would tell you (despite trying), Devan does not slow down and is always trying to fit AOTDs into each open moment. Whether it be hiking, paddleboarding, road-biking, running, Crossfitting, weight-lifting, snowboarding or simply exploring different parts of CO with her favorite furry friend Bailey & her husband Jeremy, it’s safe to say Devan has found her “Home” here in Colorado!

Fun fact – Devan had reconstructive hip surgery in 2016 (actually called a Periacetabular Osteotomy… but that’s a tongue twister). After a 22 month recovery period, she proved doctors wrong, returned to play her senior of lacrosse continues to use this experience as motivation to encourage everyone she interacts with to truly treat movement as a gift and to never take it for granted. With that being said, to keep her body active, she needs to make sure her gear can support her so she can remain #PAOStrong!
Devan is excited to join the Engearment team!
