Marmot Men’s AirExchange UPF 50 Hoody

Review by Will Trail

Initial Impressions

A recent addition to Marmot’s spring/summer lineup, the Men’s AirExchange UPF 50 Hoody is designed for warm-weather adventures. It features lightweight, breathable fabric with UPF 50 sun protection—ideal for those looking to stay cool, comfortable, and covered during outdoor activities.

Sun hoodies like this are becoming increasingly popular as a practical alternative to sunscreen. The Marmot Men’s AirExchange UPF 50 Hoody combines breathability with protection, thanks to its full-length sleeves and snug, “scuba”-style hood that offer coverage without overheating.

Made from 100% pre-consumer recycled polyester, the fabric feels soft yet durable. Flat-felled seams add to the shirt’s comfort and long-term wearability by reducing chafing and improving overall construction.

Notable features include a well-fitted hood that stays in place without feeling tight, thumbholes at the cuffs for added hand protection, and a small right-side pocket—handy for stashing small items like snacks or an ID.

Detailed Review

I’ve worn the Men’s AirExchange UPF 50 Hoody on desert camping trips and mountain bike rides. It’s versatile enough for both cool mornings and hot afternoons, and it looks good enough to wear casually as well.

Based on Marmot’s size chart, I’m typically at the upper end of an XL, but I opted for a XXL. In hindsight, I’d size down next time—this hoody runs large. That said, the roomier fit allowed for unrestricted movement, which is a big plus during active use. The fabric is impressively breathable, lightweight, and doesn’t attract much dirt.

One of the main reasons I chose this hoody was sun protection. After several hours in direct sunlight, I experienced no sunburn on covered areas. The hood can comfortably fit over a bike helmet while still allowing for full head and neck movement. The sleeve openings are well-proportioned, the shoulder cut is athletic without being tight, and the bottom hem stays in place during motion, avoiding any ride-up or gaps. The fabric dries quickly and ventilates well, making it ideal for multi-hour use in warm, sunny conditions.

Closing Thoughts

The Marmot Men’s AirExchange UPF 50 Hoody is a breathable, comfortable, and eco-conscious option for outdoor activities. Made from 100% recycled polyester, it delivers excellent sun protection without sacrificing comfort or style. It’s great for hiking, biking, camping—or even just hanging out. Just be mindful of the generous fit and consider sizing down if you prefer a more tailored look. This hoody has become a go-to piece for me when I need lightweight coverage with performance in mind.
