Outdoor Research Freewheel MTB Lite Ride Short
Review by Will Trail
Initial Impressions
Outdoor Research’s Freewheel MTB Lite Ride Shorts are designed for shorter time frame mountain biking adventures, prioritizing sun protection and comfort while not being too bulky or warm. Their appearance and functionality make them suitable for both the trail and more casual social settings.

Outdoor Research Freewheel MTB Lite Ride Short
The Outdoor Research Freewheel MTB Lite Ride shorts are made from bluesign® approved four-way stretch fabric, which offers moderate stretch, breathability, abrasion resistance and quick-drying capabilities—ideal for staying comfortable on rides. The fabric also features a durable water repellent (DWR) finish to help shed water and keep you dry. The shorts include one front right hip pocket with a zipper keeping true to the minimalist feel.

Sizing runs true to standard men’s sizes. If you’re between sizes or prefer a looser fit, consider sizing up—though I found the built-in stretch more than adequate for comfort and mobility during both walking and riding. Breathability is enhanced through the light fabric and minimalist build that eliminates unneeded extra fabric while still providing UPF 50+ sun protection.

The slide lock waistband closure was a nice feature for me: you simply interlock the two sides and slide them to secure the waistband. Additional fit adjustment is available via Low-Pro™ adjustment tabs on each side. Both the crotch gusseting and bottom hem appear well-constructed and ready for extensive use.

I wore these shorts on shorter trail rides (1-2 hours). The articulated leg openings and 10.5” inseam length work well with knee pads while still allowing free movement. The fabric allows plenty of stretch for unrestricted pedaling and movement, and there’s ample room to wear padded chamois shorts and/or knee pads underneath. I experimented with different waistband tightness levels—you can really lock them down or keep a looser fit depending on your preference. The side hip pocket was big enough for snacks and a phone but I would need to wear a hip pack or backpack for longer rides where more storage is needed. The fabric breathes well, dries very quickly (~15 min in a breeze) and I never felt overheated while wearing them.
Closing Thoughts
Overall, the Outdoor Research Freewheel MTB Lite Ride Shorts are made from high-quality bluesign® approved materials that provide excellent sun protection, light water resistance, and all-day breathable comfort. They don’t trap heat, allow full mobility, offer plenty of waist adjustment and are versatile enough for biking, hiking or casual outings. These are now in my every day riding rotation and I really enjoy wearing them in both active and casual situations.
