Mammut Stoney HS Thermo Hooded Jacket Men
Paul Gallaher

I’ve been fond of Mammut ski wear for a long time. My first Mammut ski jacket lasted many years, but when my size changed after losing some weight, I was interested in trying out some of their newer gear. Fortunately, I was able to test their latest insulated all-mountain ski jacket and pants (that review is coming soon). Here’s what I found when trying out the Stoney HS Thermo Hooded jacket:
Details: First, the Mammut Stoney HS Thermo hooded jacket is one of two insulated ski jackets that Mammut markets to customers. The other jacket is the “Fall Line HS Thermo Hooded Jacket.” That jacket is a bit lighter than the Stoney and has a few less upgrades/features.
This jacket is touted as Mammut’s “best selling and most versatile…ski jacket”. It’s got a plethora of exterior zippered pockets with water-repellent zippers on the outside of the jacket everywhere including the x-shaped pit zips. There are also several interior pockets.

The outer layer of the jacket is two layers of waterproof laminate. In keeping with the theme of keeping the wearer dry, there is a removable snow skirt inside the jacket and the sleeves have snug wrist cuffs to keep arms dry. The wrists have velcro closures to complement gloves or mittens that will go well either inside or outside the sleeves.
There is an elastic adjustable hem with adjusters on both sides of the waist. The generous hood does fit over the helmet and keeps wind and water out on those days when it’s blasting on the mountain. The jacket is well insulated with zoned synthetic insulation.

Lastly, this jacket is made of fully recycled fabric. It’s a BLUESIGN product and has PFC-free durable water repellent.
Wear testing:
This Mammut jacket has picked up right where my first Mammut insulated ski jacket left off. The wind and water blocking work great! The jacket fits me very well. I love that it has some tailorable features, especially the elastic hem and the sleeves’ velcro cuffs which were easy for me to adjust, even with mittens or gloves on.
While I don’t normally ski with a hood over my helmet, this one does fit over my helmet for those very cold, windy days. The pit zip vents work very well on days when the temperature or the wind varies. I very much like the double zippers on these vents that allow me to tailor where and how much ventilation there is. I’d never buy another ski jacket without effective pit zips.
They’re essential for temperature and moisture management during long ski days with changing conditions! My last few points: First, the water repellent zippers on the chest pockets give me the confidence to ski with my phone in one of these external pockets, knowing the phone won’t get wet, even on deep powder days.
And lastly, this jacket just looks great! The fit is true to size and the confidence I have in the brand allows me to not think much about my clothing while I’m out skiing. There’s security in just knowing what you’re wearing works!

The color I tested was the Black colorway, which I like very much. The jacket is also available in a green color Mammut calls; “Dark Marsh”
The jacket I tested is available in sizes from Small to 3XL. It is available in two colors.
This jacket is also available in two colors in women’s sizes.
