Mammut Stoney HS Thermo Pants

Review by Paul Gallaher

Details

The Stoney HS Thermo Pants are one of two insulated ski pants that Mammut markets to customers. The other model is the “Fall Line HS Thermo Pants”. The Stoney HS Thermo Pants are the higher tier of the two options.

Recently, I was able to try out and review the companion jacket for these pants; the Mammut Stoney HS Thermo Hooded Jacket . These black pants were a perfect color match for the jacket and are made of equivalent components.

These pants have a very wide adjustable waistband with adjustable hook-and-loop straps on each hip at the waist. There are two generous front pockets with water repellent zippers (similar to those found on a dry suit). There are large vents on each hip running down the outer sides of each thigh. The bottom of the pants have built in gaiters with anti-slip grip to hold them in place. There is a nice Cordura-reinforced area on the inner side of the bottom of each leg to help resist abrasion from an errant ski edge.

These pants are made of mostly recycled fabric. It’s a BLUESIGN product and has PFC-free durable water repellent.

Wear Testing

These Mammut pants have very much impressed me. For decades, I’ve only worn ski bibs because I couldn’t find ski pants that would stay put on my waist without having to put a pair of suspenders on them. These pants DO stay put due to the wide waistband, adjustable hook-and-loop cinch-straps, and two very hearty snaps at the front of the waist (a previous brand I’ve worn had poor-quality snaps that would pop open as soon as I bent over at the waist). The wind and water blocking work very well, especially in spring conditions!

The pants fit me very well. I am 6’2”, 165 lbs and wear a Size 34-Normal. The vents on these pants work very effectively (I’d never wear ski pants without them) and also seal up well on those cold ski days. I also like how the gaiters keep these in place over my ski boots. My last few points: These pants look great and I don’t really have to think about or reposition them while I’m wearing them. I had my doubts since they weren’t bibs!

The color I tested was the Black colorway, which I like very much. The pants are also available in a green color Mammut calls; “Dark Marsh”

The pants are available in a variety of sizes AND lengths (a rarity in ski pants/bibs). The smallest available are Size 28 and they go up to a Size 40.

These pants are available for women in black and marine, ranging in sizes from 2-15 and in short, regular and long lengths.
