Patagonia Stretch Rainshadow Jacket – Recycled Fishnet Rain Protection

The Patagonia Stretch Rainshadow is a lightweight and stretchy rain jacket.  Made from recycled ECONYL fabric, which includes recycled fishnets. Packed with all the features you could want in a shell.

The jacket is lightweight and highly packable.  Thanks to the 30D ECONYL fabric and minimalist design. When I say minimalist, I don’t mean lacking for features either.  The Rainshadow has all the features that I would look for in a rain shell.  Two zippered hand pockets, one zippered Napoleon pocket, adjustable hood and pit zips.

This Patagonia proprietary waterproof breathable membrane is tried and true.  This makes the jacket waterproof and windproof.  It also means that it is packable.  Just check out the pic below! In fact, the entire jacket will stuff into the chest pocket.  I usually just roll jackets into their own hoods, as I am a bit lazy 🙂

Regardless, the materials are good at protecting from rain and wind, while remaining breathable.  Patagonia claims 20k waterproof on this WPB membrane.  I like that Patagonia tests their membranes out by beating the crap out of them and then re-testing the waterproofing.  Read more about that process here.

Good fit and good looks

Some rain jackets are kind of ugly.  They can be boxy and unflattering.  They can also be crunchy and noisy.  Not so with the Rainshadow.  It is light and stretchy, as well as fits accurately.  I chose the size large and feel that it was a great fit.  Sometimes I have to go up to XL to accommodate my back and chest, but the fit on this shell was spot on.  For reference, I am 6’1″ 205lbs, 45″ chest, and 33″ waist.  So, if you are built anything like that, then this jacket will fit you very well.

Review of Stretch Rainshadow Shell

I picked this shell up in the spring of 2019 and have been using it almost daily for 3 months.  From city use to the mountains, from warm summer rain, to late spring snow.  I have fallen in love with this shell.  It goes with me everywhere, either in my city pack or backpack.  I appreciate the good looks and function of the jacket.

I tried hard to find something for this jacket any better.  The only thing I could ask for is a 3 layer membrane.  But, that would easily bump the price up from the very fair $199 to something closer to a high-end shell.  So, with all of these details and observations in mind, I can say that this is a great rain shell at a very fair price.  Though in the fact that it is made of recycled materials, some of which are repurposed fish nets, and you have a great jacket!

  2. […] There is a slight bit of mechanical stretch to it as well.  Not as much as last year’s Stretch Rainshadow, but this material is more durable and has 3L over 2.5L.  So, the tradeoff is worth it in my opinion.  Here is the review on the previous Rainshadow. […]
