Patagonia introduces the new Workwear line this year as their entry into the durable work clothing category. Think of Carhartt or other duck canvas clothing, then do it the Patagonia way. This is a tough clothing category… so Patagonia had a lot to do to compete in this market. The Patagonia Iron Forge Hemp Canvas Barn Coatis their version of the classic cold-weather work jacket.
Materials
The Iron Forge Hemp Barn Jacket is made of a 12.9 oz durable canvas comprised of 55% industrial hemp / 27% recycled polyester / 18% organic cotton. Patagonia claims that this combo is 25% stronger than traditional 12 oz duck canvas. Not only is stronger, but it is also softer and needs no break-in. I can attest to the softness of the material from the moment I put it on.
Fair Trade
Of course, it is Fair Trade, it’s Patagonia! Not only did they use a majority of recycled materials in the Barn Coat, but they also use Fair Trade Certified sewing. The attention is in the details. Learn more about Patagonia’s Fair Trade Certified program.
Warmth
The Iron Forge Hemp Barn Coat is the warmest in the Workwear line. 100 grams of recycled polyester (Thermogreen) insulate this jacket. The length is also the longest in the line up as well. Fleece lined pockets make for a nice place to warm up your hands.
Fit
The coat is a “Relaxed” fit according to Patagonia. I would call it a “huge” fit. I am usually an XL in Patagonia jackets and the Large was more than big enough for my 6’1” 200 frame. Even when I layered over an insulated flannel shirt, the coat was still roomy. Keep that in mind when purchasing. Size down!
Function
I used Patagonia’s Barn Coat over the fall and early winter in the mountains of Colorado. From felling trees, tending campfires to scraping ice and snow off my truck – the jacket saw a lot of use. I am not used to such a large fitting jacket, nor am I used to such a burly and heavy jacket. So it did not see time on some hikes other activities were warmth to weight ratio were a priority. One of the most interesting features of this jacket – the lower back storage pocket. I was able to fit a 32oz insulated thermos and foot long sub back there.
If you spend a lot of time outside on a ranch or cabin and have the need for a durable work coat – the Iron Forge Hemp Barn coat would fit the bill quite nicely. Take into consideration the recycled materials, Fair Trade Certified construction and all the other good things that Patagonia does and you have an ideal work jacket for the environmentally conscious.
