Patagonia Torrentshell 3L Jacket – The Trusted Rain Jacket Gets an Upgrade

The Patagonia Torrentshell has been a tried and true rain jacket for several years.  New, for February 2020, the jacket gets upgraded to a 3L membrane! The Torrentshell 3L $149.

Classic Rain Shell

Patagonia has been making the Torrentshell for a long time.  They say it “never gets old” and we would agree.  It seems to be one of those pieces of gear that just works, year after year.  Nothing glamorous about it.  No fancy pockets or ultralight claims.  Just a jacket that keeps the rain out and does not complain.

What could make it better?

The 50D material was already made of recycled fabric and bluesign Certified.  The 2.5L H2No Performance Standard membrane has been working fine for years too. So what else could Patagonia do to improve the Torrentshell?

3 Layer WPB Membrane

Yep, that’s right.  They went and made the waterproof breathable membrane out of legit 3 layer H2No Performance Shell. This is something that is not common in the “entry-level” price point.  At $129 MSRP, you get one heck of a nice jacket.  The 3L design allows for a minimum of 20K waterproofing.

Made to last

Made of 50D materials, the Torrentshell is made to last.  This jacket can take years of use and abuse.  Personally, I used it daily for a month.  Subjected it to several rain storms (even some hail) and let the dogs sleep on it in our truck.  Nothing seemed to scathe it.

Fit and function

I was sent an XL to test out.  I am usually on the fence between Large and XL with Patagonia.  For the Stretch Rainshadow, I wear a Large, FWIW.  I seemed to fit well in the XL for the new Torrentshell 3L.  For reference, I am 6’1″ 205lb, 45″ chest, and 33″ waist.  The sleeves were long enough to fully cover my 36″ arms as well. The slightly boxy fit was not an issue for regular use.  I think the Large might be too tight in the shoulders if I were being picky.

The entire jacket packs up into the left pocket for easy storage as well.  There are just two hand pockets on this jacket.  If I were to wish for something, it might be one additional Napolean style pocket.  But, honestly, that is just not that important.  As you can see from the video shot in the rain, the jacket does what it is supposed to, and does it very well.
